The Coastwatchers (TV Movie)
''The Coastwatchers'' is a docudrama television film about coastwatchers made in 1959 by producer Roger Mirams for Pacific Films. It starred Ken Goodlet and Kevin Colson and was written by John Sherman and directed by Mirams. It was a backdoor pilot for a TV series that did not eventuate. However Mirams later used the ideas for the series in ''Spyforce'' (1971–72). The pilot was entitled "Operation Plum Pudding". Plot During World War Two, Australian coastwatcher Don Marshall operates on a small island off New Guinea. He is entrusted with relaying information to Allied headquarters. As the Japanese advance, Marshall learns that two civilians have not been evacuated. He knows that both are aware of his coastwatching activities, and that one of them - a German born planter - may betray him. Roger Mirams
Roger Eastgate Holden Mirams (16 April 1918 – 26 February 2004) was a New Zealand-born film producer and director, whose career extended over 60 years. Mirams co-directed ''Broken Barrier'', the only local dramatic feature film made in New Zealand in the 1950s, and later won a reputation for the children's television series he produced in Australia. Biography Mirams was born in the New Zealand city of Christchurch, New Zealand where he made his first film aged 13, ''When the Gangsters Came to Christchurch''. It screened at a local cinema in 1931. Mirams joined the New Zealand Army at the outbreak of World War II, working as a war correspondent and cameraman throughout the duration of the war, which saw him travel with the New Zealand Division throughout Italy and the Middle East. Docudrama
Docudrama (or documentary drama) is a genre of television and film, which features dramatized re-enactments of actual events. It is described as a hybrid of documentary and drama and "a fact-based representation of real event". The Coastwatchers, also known as the Coast Watch Organisation, Combined Field Intelligence Service or Section C, Allied Intelligence Bureau, were Allied military intelligence operatives stationed on remote Pacific islands during World War II to observe enemy movements and rescue stranded Allied personnel. They played a significant role in the Pacific Ocean theatre and South West Pacific theatre, particularly as an early warning network during the Guadalcanal campaign. Pacific Films is a film production company in New Zealand. It is not to be confused with other companies with the name, including the film company in Hawaii that produced Phantom Below''. History The Pacific Film Unit was established in Wellington in 1948 by Alun Falconer and Roger Mirams, who were ex-National Film Unit staff. At that time, most films produced in New Zealand were documentaries made by the government's National Film Unit. John O'Shea joined in 1950. A television pilot (also known as a pilot or a pilot episode and sometimes marketed as a tele-movie), in United States television, is a standalone episode of a television series that is used to sell a show to a television network or other distributor. A pilot is created to be a testing ground to gauge whether a series will be successful. ''Spyforce'' is an Australian television series that aired from 1971 to 1973 on Nine Network. The series was based upon the adventures of Australian Military Intelligence operatives in the South West Pacific during World War II. It was produced by Nine Network in conjunction with Paramount Pictures. The series centres on the action and adventures of lead actor Jack Thompson's character Erskine, and his main support character, Peter Sumner's Gunthar Haber. Arthur Reginald Evans, DSC (14 May 1905 – 31 January 1989) was an Australian coastwatcher in the Pacific Ocean theatre in World War II. He is chiefly remembered for having played a significant part in the rescue of future US President John F. Kennedy and his surviving crew after their motor torpedo boat, '' PT-109'', was sunk by the Japanese in August 1943. Early life Evans was born in Sydney, New South Wales, on 14 May 1905, the oldest of three children to parents Stuart and Edith. Interested in being a sailor, after high school, he was rejected for a cadetship at the naval college in Jervis Bay, so joined as a senior cadet in the local militia instead, eventually becoming a second lieutenant.
