The Chekist
''The Chekist'' (russian: Чекист) is a 1992 Russian-French historical drama film directed by Aleksandr Rogozhkin, based on a 1923 short story by Vladimir Zazubrin. It tells the story of a bloody work and downfall of a Soviet Cheka security official involved in mass executions during the Russian Civil War. Plot The film is set during the Russian Civil War in the period of the Red Terror. In a provincial Cheka (the All-Russian Emergency Commission for Combating Counter-Revolution and Sabotage) office in an unnamed small town, a routine bureaucratic work is taking place. Every day, a NKVD troika, Cheka troika tribunal made of director Srubov and his assistants Pepel and Katz reads out a long list of all kinds of real and perceived Counter-revolutionary, counter-revolutionaries and class enemies. Aleksandr Rogozhkin
Aleksandr Vladimirovich Rogozhkin (russian: Алекса́ндр Влади́мирович Рого́жкин; 3 October 1949 – 23 October 2021) was a Russian film director and writer. Career In 1990, Rogozhkin directed ''Karaul'', which won the Alfred Bauer Prize at the 40th Berlin International Film Festival. Rogozhkin's film '' The Chekist'' was screened in the Un Certain Regard section at the 1992 Cannes Film Festival. Abroad, he is famous for his acclaimed 2002 film '' The Cuckoo (Kukushka)'', which won the Golden Eagle Award for Best Picture, Best Screenplay, Best Directing, and Best Feature Film. The film was also entered into the 24th Moscow International Film Festival where he won the award for Best Director.
