The Amazons (1917 Film)
''The Amazons'' is a 1917 American silent comedy film directed by Joseph Kaufman and starred Marguerite Clark, Elsie Lawson, and Helen Greene. The film was based on the 1883 play of the same name by Sir Arthur Wing Pinero, and adapted for the screen by Frances Marion. It was produced and distributed by Famous Players-Lasky and distributed by Paramount Pictures under the Famous Players-Lasky name. The film is now presumed lost. Plot As described in a film magazine review, because the parents are disappointed that their three children are girls instead of boys, they are brought up as boys by the Marchioness of Castlejordan (Robinson), and no males are allowed within the walls of the estate. The antics of the three upset the villagers and cause gossip. Tommy (Clark), the youngest, is sent to London to visit relatives. Joseph Kaufman (director)
Joseph Kaufman (1882 – February 1, 1918) was an American silent film actor and director prominent during the World War I years. He was born in Washington, D.C. and died in New York City. Kaufman graduated from Georgetown University. His wife was silent film star Ethel Clayton. Kaufman started out as an actor appearing on Broadway in ''Mistakes Will Happen'' (1906) and ''The Pretty Sister of Jose'' (1903) with Maude Adams. His other Broadway credits included ''Three Twins'' (1908), ''Caught in the Rain'' (1906), ''Twiddle-Twaddle'' (1906), and ''La Belle Marseillaise'' (1905). He acted in a troupe of Henry B. Harris. He eventually changed to acting in and then directing silent films, his output being numerous short films. As American films began to expand to feature length, Kaufman followed suit. Jack Standing (10 February 1886 – 25 October 1917) was an English born American actor. Biography The son of stage actor Herbert Standing and brother of Wyndham Standing (1880–1963), who also was a famous actor in the early days of film, Jack Standing first appeared in Broadway musicals such as '' The Belle of New York'' and ''Florodora'' before he went to the Biograph Company in 1909. Because he was a handsome young man, he was quickly offered many roles and signed a contract with Sigmund Lubin in 1911. Like many others from the silent film, Standing was asked to play quite everything from passionate lovers to villains or old men. In 1915, he told the ''Moving Picture World'' magazine, "Spare me from being a one-type actor!" He appeared in more than fifty films.
