The Tata Steel Chess Tournament 2022 is the 84th edition of the annual chess tournament held in Wijk aan Zee. It was held from 14 January to 30 January 2022. No visitors were allowed due to the COVID-19 pandemic in the Netherlands. Norwegian GM Magnus Carlsen scored 9.5/13 in the Masters section with 6 wins and 7 draws, thereby winning the tournament for the eighth time in his career. Fabiano Caruana
Fabiano Luigi Caruana (born July 30, 1992) is an American chess grandmaster. A chess prodigy, Caruana became a grandmaster at the age of 14 years, 11 months, and 20 days—the youngest grandmaster in the history of both Italy and the United States at the time. Born in Miami to Italian parents, Caruana grew up in Park Slope, Brooklyn. He played for the United States until 2005, when he transferred his national federation affiliation to Italy. FIDE Titles
FIDE titles are awarded by the international chess governing body FIDE (''Fédération Internationale des Échecs'') for outstanding performance. The highest such title is Grandmaster (GM). Titles generally require a combination of Elo rating and norms (performance benchmarks in competitions including other titled players). Once awarded, titles are held for life except in cases of fraud or cheating. Open titles may be earned by all players, while women's titles are restricted to female players. Jhr. Lucas van Foreest (born 3 March 2001) is a Dutch chess grandmaster. He won the Dutch Chess Championship in 2019. Van Foreest earned the International Master title in 2016 and was awarded the Grandmaster title in 2018, at age 17. A member of the Van Foreest family, his brother Jorden won the Dutch Chess Championship in 2016, and both his great-great grandfather Arnold and great-great granduncle Dirk were three-time Dutch Champions. Erwin L'Ami
Erwin l'Ami (born 5 April 1985 in Woerden) is a Dutch chess grandmaster. Early years l'Ami learned to play chess at the age of five, when his father introduced him to the moves and then took him to the local chess club. Chess career At Gausdal in 2004, he won the tournament, ahead of Magnus Carlsen and despite being expected to finish no higher than mid-table. Rinat Jumabayev
Rinat Jumabayev ( kk, Ринат Жұмабаев (''Rinat Jūmabaev''), also spelled ''Rinat Dzhumabaev''; born 23 July 1989) is a Kazakhstani chess player. He was awarded the title of Grandmaster by FIDE in 2009. Biography Many times Jumabayev represented Kazakhstan at the Asian Youth Chess Championships and World Youth Chess Championships in different age categories. Jonas Buhl Bjerre (born 26 June 2004) is a Danish chess player. He holds the title of grandmaster. Biography In 2015, Jonas Buhl Bjerre won the Nordic Youth Chess Championship in the group E (for players born in 2004 and 2005). The next year he won the group D. Bjerre won a gold medal at the 2017 European Youth Chess Championships, held in Mamaia, in the U14 category. The next year, in Riga, he took the bronze medal in the same division. Thai Dai Van Nguyen
Thai Dai Van Nguyen (born 12 December 2001) is a Czech chess Grandmaster of Vietnamese descent. Biography Thai Dai Van Nguyen's father is a Vietnamese businessman. In 2011, Thai Dai Van Nguyen won the Czech Youth Chess Championship in the U10 age group. After that, he twice in a row won the Czech Youth Chess Championship in the U12 age group (2012, 2013). In 2016, Thai Dai Van Nguyen was awarded the FIDE International Master (IM) title and received the FIDE Grandmaster (GM) title two years later. Grandmaster (chess)
Grandmaster (GM) is a title awarded to chess players by the world chess organization FIDE. Apart from World Champion, Grandmaster is the highest title a chess player can attain. Once achieved, the title is held for life, though exceptionally it has been revoked for cheating. The title of Grandmaster, along with the lesser FIDE titles of International Master (IM) and FIDE Master (FM), is open to all players regardless of gender. The great majority of grandmasters are men, but 40 women have been awarded the GM title as of 2022, out of a total of about 2000 grandmasters. Nils Axel Grandelius (born 3 June 1993 in Lund, Sweden) is a Swedish chess grandmaster. He is the top ranked player of Sweden. Chess career FIDE awarded him the titles FIDE Master, in 2007, International Master, in 2008, and Grandmaster in 2010. In 2008, Grandelius tied for second place, placing fourth on countback, in the Under 16 section of the European Youth Chess Championships. Rameshbabu Praggnanandhaa (born 10 August 2005) is an Indian chess grandmaster. A chess prodigy, he earned the international master title at the age of 10, the youngest at the time to do so, and the grandmaster title at age 12, the second-youngest at the time to do so.
