Tarkington Independent School District
Tarkington Independent School District is a public school district in north central Liberty County, Texas ( USA). All 4 campuses are located on the same plot of land, with the High School facing County Road 2268, and the other three campus are along Farm to Market Road 163. The district covers ; and the schools are located seven miles (11 km) southeast of Cleveland and fifty miles northeast of Houston. The communities served include Dolen, Hightower, Rayburn, and Tarkington Prairie. The boundaries of the district are the Liberty/ San Jacinto county line to the north, the Trinity River to the east, Luce Bayou to the south, and Tarkington Bayou to the east. In 2009, the school district was rated "academically acceptable" by the Texas Education Agency. One of the district trustees is Dwayne Stovall. Tarkington Prairie, Texas
Tarkington Prairie is a primarily rural unincorporated community spread out over approximately in northeastern Liberty County, Texas, United States. The community's fire protection is provided by Tarkington Volunteer Fire Department, emergency medical services by Liberty County EMS, and law enforcement by Liberty County Sheriff's Office. History The area that now constitutes Tarkington was settled in 1826 when the first settlers purchased land from the Mexican government and became ranchers. The flat, wooded land was once open prairie where cattle grazed. The area is named for one of these early settlers, Burton Tarkington, who is buried in McGinnis Cemetery and is remembered with a historical marker in front of the Tarkington Volunteer Fire Department. Tarkington (surname)
Tarkington is an English surname, a variant of the place name Torkington; other variants include Talkington and Turkington. John Tarkington, Sr., his wife Prudence, their son John, Jr. and wife Martha, and their son William Joshua came to America in about 1668. They settled on of land in Baltimore County, Maryland. The plantation was named "The Grove". John Tarkington was one of the original settlers of Maryland. He began to accumulate property by getting settlers to move to a certain locality. In 1675 he transported a group into the province to inhabit Cecil County and obtained for himself. John Tarkington had a son Samuel, who it is said was killed or kidnapped by the natives. Tarkington (automobile)
The Tarkington automobile was a two-door, six-cylinder, gas-powered car built in the early 1920s in Rockford, Illinois. Joseph Arthur Tarkington tried very hard to get his car into mass-production, but was unsuccessful. The company was incorporated in January 1920 with $500,000 of initial funding. It took three years before a prototype was displayed to the public. The vehicles had a home-made six- cylinder engine with OHV valve control. It was specified with a 260 cubic inches (about 4261 cm³) displacement and 54 hp. The chassis had a wheelbase of 320 cm. The only body design was an open touring car with five seats. Although well received by the press, additional capital needed for mass production was not forthcoming and the company was dissolved on June 1, 1923. Joseph filed several patents for the car, and there are stories that he was a pioneer in many things related to the automobile, albeit never receiving any credit.
