Tanquetazo
''El Tanquetazo'' or ''El Tancazo'' (both Spanish for "tank putsch") of 29 June 1973 was a failed coup attempt in Chile led by Lieutenant Colonel Roberto Souper against the government of Socialist president Salvador Allende. It is named because the rebelling officers primarily used tanks. It was successfully put down by loyal Constitutionalist soldiers led by Army Commander-in-Chief Carlos Prats. Background By the beginning of June 1973, an important part of the high command of the Chilean Armed Forces had lost all respect for the Popular Unity government of President Salvador Allende, which had been in office since November 1970. Roberto Souper
Roberto Federico Souper Onfray (2 May 1927 – 24 August 2015) was a Chilean military officer who launched an unsuccessful coup d'état against the Allende administration, surrounding the presidential palace with a tank regiment. Twenty-two civilians were killed during the brief coup attempt, including Leonardo Henrichsen, a Swedish-Argentine news photographer filming the events. Early life Souper was married to María Eugenia Wilshaw. He attended the Chilean military academy following his attendance at the Jesuit-run secondary school, "San Ignacio" in Santiago. After being commissioned as an Army officer he rose through the ranks and served with units including the "Húsares" of Angol, and the "Granaderos" of Iquique. Tacnazo insurrection (October 21, 1969) ( es, El Tacnazo) was a brief revolt of the Tacna artillery regiment, led by General Roberto Viaux, in what turned out to be a non-violent demonstration against the government of Chilean President Eduardo Frei Montalva. Carlos Prats
Carlos Prats González (; February 24, 1915 – September 30, 1974) was a Chilean Army officer and politician. He served as a minister in Salvador Allende's government while Commander-in-chief of the Chilean Army. Immediately after General Augusto Pinochet's September 11, 1973 coup, Prats went into voluntary exile in Argentina. The following year, he and his wife, Sofía Cuthbert, were assassinated in Buenos Aires by a car bomb planted by the Dirección de Inteligencia Nacional. José Tohá
José Tohá González (February 6, 1927 – March 15, 1974) was a Chilean journalist, lawyer, and politician of the Socialist Party (PS). Biography Tohá was born in Chillán, the son of Spanish immigrant José Tohá Soldavilla and of Brunilda González Monteagudo. After completing his secondary studies in his natal city, he studied law at the Universidad de Chile. While there, he was president of the University of Chile Student Federation (FECh) between 1950–1951. In 1958, he joined the staff of the newspaper ''Última Hora'', and in 1960 he became its editor and majority owner, a position he held until 1970. In 1942, while still a high school student, Tohá joined the Socialist Party of Chile (PS). Leonardo Henrichsen
Leonardo Henrichsen (May 29, 1940 – June 29, 1973) was an Argentine and Swedish photojournalist. Life and times Leonardo Henrichsen was born to Swedish civil engineer Kjell Henrichsen from Gothenburg and an English Argentine mother in Buenos Aires. Given a film camera as a gift during childhood, he secured an apprenticeship in ''Sucesos Argentinos'', the premier producer of newsreels in Argentina since its establishment in 1938. Mentored by Polish photojournalist Tadeo Bortnowski, Henrichsen was influenced by his teacher's experience as a war correspondent during World War II. Jan Olov Ferdinand Sandquist (born 6 August 1932) is a Swedish journalist. Career Sandquist was born in Stockholm, Sweden and was the son of Ferdinand Sandquist and Anna (née Hjort). He was a journalist at ''Mariestads-Tidningen'' in Mariestad in 1949, ''Västergötlands Annonsblad'' in 1953 and ''Göteborgs-Tidningen'' in 1955.
