Tangier Grand Lake
Tangier Grand Lake is a lake in the Halifax Regional Municipality of Nova Scotia, Canada. It is located near Mooseland, Nova Scotia. Description Tangier Grand Lake is full of islands, from the largest island, which is long and wide, to very small islands, scattered throughout the western and eastern arms. It is, for the most part, relatively shallow, but it has a relatively deep spot with a depth of approximately in its centre. The lake is located on the Eastern Shore Granite Ridge, an area of 350-million year old granite bedrock. History The remnants of a sluice, once used in log driving, can be found on Struggle Brook, one of the primary inflows into Tangier Grand Lake from Crooked Lake. Mooseland, Nova Scotia
Mooseland is a small rural community in the Eastern Shore area of Halifax Regional Municipality, Nova Scotia, on the Mooseland Road, northeast of Halifax. The area is known to have deposits of gold and is the site of the first gold discovery in Nova Scotia. Mooseland is home to the Otter Ponds Demonstration Forest (www.opdf.ca), a community forest initiative on publicly owned lands that aims to demonstrate uneven aged forest management and restoration of the Acadian Forest along the Eastern Shore. Log Driving
Log driving is a means of moving logs (sawn tree trunks) from a forest to sawmills and pulp mills downstream using the current of a river. It was the main transportation method of the early logging industry in Europe and North America. History When the first sawmills were established, they were usually small water-powered facilities located near the source of timber, which might be converted to grist mills after farming became established when the forests had been cleared. Later, bigger circular sawmills were developed in the lower reaches of a river, with the logs floated down to them by log drivers.
