Takhini-Kopper King
Takhini-Kopper King is an electoral district which returns a member (known as an MLA) to the Legislative Assembly of Yukon in Canada. It was created in 2009 out of much of the former riding of McIntyre-Takhini. The riding includes the Whitehorse subdivisions of Takhini and Raven's Ridge, as well as the Kopper King, Takhini, and Northland mobile home parks and the residences along the Fish Lake Road. Yukon University and the Whitehorse Correctional Centre Campus are also situated in this electoral district. However, inmates' votes are counted in their home district. Kate White (politician)
Kate White (born 1977) is a Canadian politician, who was elected to in the Yukon Legislative Assembly in the 2011 election. She represents the Whitehorse electoral district of Takhini-Kopper King as a member of the Yukon New Democratic Party caucus. Since May 2019, she has been leader of the Yukon NDP. Political career White first entered territorial politics in the 2006 election, when she ran in the riding of Porter Creek Centre for the Yukon New Democratic Party against incumbent Yukon Party Cabinet minister Archie Lang. She finished third. In 2011, she ran again for the NDP in the newly created riding of Takhini-Kopper King, defeating former Whitehorse City Councillor Samson Hartland to win the riding. 34th Legislature Of Yukon
The 34th Yukon Legislative Assembly commenced on November 8, 2016, after Yukon voters defeated the Yukon Party government under the leadership of Darrell Pasloski and returned a Liberal majority government under the leadership of Sandy Silver. The Yukon Party was reduced to Official Opposition status and the New Democrats were reduced to Third Party status. It is the second Liberal government in Yukon history. First Session The first session of the 34th Legislative Assembly was convened on January 12, 2017. The single-day session was called by the Premier in order to allow the legislature to elect a new Speaker (Nils Clarke) and establish committee membership from among the MLAs. 2011 Yukon General Election
The 2011 general election in Yukon, Canada, took place on October 11, 2011, to return members to the 33rd Yukon Legislative Assembly. The incumbent government was led by Darrell Pasloski, who was elected as leader of the Yukon Party at a convention on May 28, 2011, replacing former Premier Dennis Fentie. The Yukon Party won its third majority government, with Elizabeth Hanson's NDP becoming the Official Opposition, replacing the Liberal Party, whose leader Arthur Mitchell was unable to return to the Assembly. Jeane Lassen
Jeane Elizabeth Lassen (born 26 September 1980) is a Canadian weightlifter. Lassen is from Whitehorse, Yukon and is one of few Yukon athletes to break into the world scene and is Yukon's first Summer Olympian. Weightlifting official Moira Lassen is her mother. At 14 years old, Lassen won a silver medal in the women's 59 kg category at the 1995 Canada Winter Games in Grande Prairie, Alberta and still holds the Games record in the Clean & Jerk. She also won the Roland Michener Award for her leadership on and off the field of play. This, of course, was before she became a national athlete. Lassen qualified to compete at the 1995 Canadian Championships and the 1995 Junior World Weightlifting Championships (the first junior international event for women) however Lassen had to go to court to do so. The Yukon Liberal Party (french: Parti libéral du Yukon) is a political party in the territory of Yukon, Canada. The party is not organizationally linked to the federal Liberal Party of Canada in any official manner. Sandy Silver, MLA for Klondike, is the Leader of the Yukon Liberal Party and Premier of Yukon. History After twenty years as a minor party, the Yukon Liberal Party won the 2000 general election and formed a government under Premier Pat Duncan. The government, however, was reduced to minority government status. Duncan called a snap election for November 2002 in the hope of regaining her government's majority. The 2016 general election in Yukon, Canada, took place on November 7, 2016, to return members to the 34th Yukon legislative assembly. Yukon New Democratic Party
The Yukon New Democratic Party (NDP; french: Nouveau Parti démocratique du Yukon) is a social-democratic political party in the Yukon territory of Canada. The Yukon NDP first formed the government of the territory under the leadership of Tony Penikett from 1985 to 1992, and under the leadership of Piers McDonald from 1996 to 2000. 33rd Legislature Of Yukon
The 33rd Yukon Legislative Assembly commenced on October 12, 2011, after Yukon voters returned a majority Yukon Party government under the leadership of Darrell Pasloski. The Yukon NDP became the official opposition while the Liberals took third place status. The membership in this Legislature increased by one seat after the boundary redistribution. Leadership changes After losing opposition status in the general election and going from five seats to two, the Liberal party has been beset with leadership issues. Yukon University
Yukon University (formerly Yukon College) is a public university in the Canadian territory of Yukon. The university main campus is based in Whitehorse, although the institution also operates 12 campuses throughout the territory. The university confers bachelor's degrees, diplomas, certificates as well as trades and vocational training and adult basic education. The institution is currently the only university based in northern Canada. The institution traces its origins to the Whitehorse Vocational and Technical Training Centre established in 1963; later renamed as the Yukon Vocational and Training Centre in 1965.
