Tuvana-i-Colo
Tuvana-i-Colo is an uninhabited atoll in the southeastern part of the island state of Fiji in the Pacific Ocean. It is the second most southern atoll of the Lau archipelago and represents Fiji's third most southern landmass. It is located about 25 km south of Ono-i-Lau, the southernmost inhabited Fijian atoll, and 8 kilometres east-northeast of the neighboring atoll Tuvana-i-Ra. It is completely surrounded by a fringing reef. History The island was sighted in 1820 by the Russian explorer Fabian Gottlieb von Bellingshausen and named "Siminov” (after the astronomer Ivan Mikhailovich Simonov who was on expedition with him). Tuvana-i-Ra
Tuvana-i-Ra is an uninhabited atoll in the southeastern part of the island state of Fiji in the Pacific Ocean. It is the southernmost atoll of the Lau archipelago and represents Fiji's second-southernmost landmass; only the remote and uninhabited atoll Ceva-i-Ra lies slightly further south. History The island was sighted in 1820 by the Russian explorer Fabian Gottlieb von Bellingshausen and named "Mikhailov” (after the artist Pavel Mikhailov who was on expedition with him). Geography Tuvana-i-Ra is located about 30 km southwest of Ono-i-Lau, Fiji's southernmost inhabited atoll, and 8 km southwest of the neighboring Tuvana-i-Colo. Ivan Mikhailovich Simonov
Ivan Mikhailovich Simonov (1794–1855) was a Russian astronomer and a geodesist. Biography He completed his studies and became a professor of physics at Kazan State University in 1816 where he was a close friend of Nikolai Lobachevsky. He was a corresponding member of the Saint Petersburg Academy of Sciences from 1829 and later went on to become the rector of Kazan State University in 1846. From 1819 to 1821 he took part in and wrote a detailed account of F. F. Bellingshausen and M. P. Lazarev’s expedition around the world, during which the continent of Antarctica was discovered. Among Simonov’s contributions are his many astronomical observations, the development of methods for such observations, and the design of a reflector. Simonov was among the first in Russia to study terrestrial magnetism. Lau Islands
The Lau Islands aka little Tonga (also called the Lau Group, the Eastern Group, the Eastern Archipelago) of Fiji are situated in the southern Pacific Ocean, just east of the Koro Sea. Of this chain of about sixty islands and islets, about thirty are inhabited. The Lau Group covers a land area of 188 square miles (487 square km), and had a population of 10,683 at the most recent census in 2007. While most of the northern Lau Group are high islands of volcanic origin, those of the south are mostly carbonate low islands. Administratively the islands belong to Lau Province. Lau Province
Lau Province is one of fourteen provinces of Fiji. Its capital is at Tubou, at the southern end of the island of Lakeba. The province forms part of the country's Eastern Division (which also includes the provinces of Kadavu and Lomaiviti), and of the Tovata Confederacy, a traditional hierarchy of chiefs from northern and eastern Fiji. Fabian Gottlieb Von Bellingshausen
Fabian Gottlieb Thaddeus von Bellingshausen (russian: Фадде́й Фадде́евич Беллинсга́узен, translit=Faddéy Faddéevich Bellinsgáuzen; – ) was a Russian naval officer, cartographer and explorer, who ultimately rose to the rank of admiral. He participated in the first Russian circumnavigation of the globe, and subsequently became a leader of another circumnavigation expedition that discovered the continent of Antarctica. Like Otto von Kotzebue and Adam Johann von Krusenstern, Bellingshausen belonged to the cohort of prominent Baltic German navigators who helped Russia launch its naval expeditions. Bellingshausen was born on Osel Island. A desert island, deserted island, or uninhabited island, is an island, islet or atoll that is not permanently populated by humans.
