Turu People (Tanzania)
The Turu (''Arimi, Wanyaturu'') are an ethnic group, ethnic and linguistic group based in the Singida Region of north-central Tanzania who speak Bantu language Turu language, Kinyaturu. In 1993, the Turu population was estimated to number 556,000. The current population of the Turu is now over 1,000,000. They speak the Turu language. ''Arimi'' (the people of Rimi) is the original endonym. The word ''Arimi'' itself literally means farmers. ''Wanyaturu'' (the people of Nyaturu) is replacing it, reflecting Swahili contact; indeed, the prefix ''wa-'' is Swahili rather than the Turu ''a-''. Tribal composition The Turu people are three tribes, the ''Airwana (Wilwana)'', half the Turu population, including the city of Singida (town), Singida; the ''Vahi (Wahi)'', and the small ''Anyiŋanyi (wanying'anyi)''. Iau Language
Iau (Iaw, Yau) or Turu is a Lakes Plain language of West Papua, Indonesia, spoken by about 600 people. Most speakers are monolingual, and their number is growing. Other peoples in the western Lakes Plain area speak basic Iau. Iau is heavily tonal, with 11 tones on nouns and 19 simple and compound tones on verbs. Names and dialects Dialects are Foi (Poi), Turu, Edopi (Elopi), and Iau proper; these may be distinct enough to be considered separate languages. Foi is spoken on the large Tariku River (Rouffaer River), Turu on the Van Daalen River, Iau proper between the rivers, and Edopi at the juncture of the Tariku and Kliki (Fou) rivers. Another name for the language is Urundi ~ Ururi. Dosobou (Dou, Doufou) is specifically Edopi. Charles Turu Tumahai
Charles Turu Tumahai (14 January 1949 – 21 December 1995) was a New Zealand singer, bass player and songwriter who was a member of several noted rock groups in New Zealand, Australia and the UK. He is best known internationally as the bassist and backing vocalist in Bill Nelson's Be-Bop Deluxe. Tumahai was born in Ōrākei, Auckland, New Zealand, where he began his music career before moving to Australia in the late 1960s. He was a member of several notable Australian bands including Chain, Healing Force, Friends and Mississippi (which later evolved into Little River Band). Tumahai traveled to the UK with Mississippi in 1974 and remained there when Mississippi broke up. Later that year he joined Be-Bop Deluxe, with whom he played and recorded until 1978, when he joined The Dukes.
