''Trionfo di Afrodite'' (Italian for ''Triumph of Aphrodite'') is a cantata written in 1951 by the German composer Carl Orff. It is the third and final installment in the '' Trionfi'' musical triptych, which also includes ''Carmina Burana'' (1937) and ''Catulli Carmina'' (1943). Background Described by the composer himself as a ''concerto scenico'' (scenic concert), the ''Trionfo'' is a representation of a ritual for a Greco-Roman wedding, in a similar fashion to Igor Stravinsky's ''Les noces''. In this case, ''Trionfo'' refers to the Roman and Renaissance ''trionfo'', meaning "procession" or "festival". By using the word ''trionfo'', Orff specifically intended to identify the work as a successor to the Renaissance and baroque tradition of the masque and pageant, not as a formal borrowing but as a rather refreshed and extended look on it. Trionfo () is an Italian word meaning "triumph", also "triumphal procession", and a triumphal car or float in such a procession. The classical triumphal procession for victorious generals and Emperors known as the Roman Triumph was revived for "Entries" by rulers and similar occasions from the Early Renaissance in 14th and 15th-century Italy, and was a major type of festival, celebrated with great extravagance. The cars are shown as open-roofed, many clearly utilitarian four-wheeled carts dressed-up for the occasion. Others were two-wheeled chariots. ''Hieros gamos'', (from and 'marriage') or hierogamy (, 'holy marriage') is a sacred marriage that takes place between gods, especially when enacted in a symbolic ritual where human participants represent the deities. Sappho 31
Sappho 31 is a lyric poem by the Archaic Greek poet Sappho of the island of Lesbos. The poem is also known as ''phainetai moi'' ( ) after the opening words of its first line, and as the Ode to Anactoria, based on a conjecture that its subject is Anactoria, a woman mentioned elsewhere by Sappho. Catullus 51
Catullus 51 is a poem by Roman love poet Gaius Valerius Catullus (''c''. 84 – ''c''. 54 BC). It is an adaptation of one of Sappho's fragmentary lyric poems, Sappho 31. Catullus replaces Sappho's beloved with his own beloved Lesbia. Unlike the majority of Catullus' poems, the meter of this poem is the sapphic meter. This meter is more musical, seeing as Sappho mainly sang her poetry. Catullus is not the only poet who translated Sappho’s poem to use for himself: Pierre de Ronsard and Salvatore Quasimodo are also known to have translated a version of it. Ernst Eulenburg the music publisher was established by Ernst Eulenburg in Leipzig in 1874. The firm started by publishing a series of studies by a Dresden piano teacher, and then expanded into light music and works for men's chorus, at first all non-copyright works.
