Treasury Note (1890–1891)
The Treasury Note (also known as a Coin Note) was a type of representative money issued by the United States government from 1890 until 1893 under authority of the Sherman Silver Purchase Act in denominations of , , , , , , and . It was issued in two series: an 1890 series with , , , , , and denominations, and an 1891 series that added the denomination. A note was designed but never issued. Usage The government issued the Treasury Note to individuals selling silver bullion to the US Treasury, Treasury. Unlike other redemption notes like Silver certificate (United States), silver and gold certificate (United States), gold certificates (which stipulated whether the note was backed by and redeemable for silver or gold coin, respectively), Treasury Notes stipulated only that they were redeemable in coin. William Starke Rosecrans
William Starke Rosecrans (September 6, 1819March 11, 1898) was an American inventor, coal-oil company executive, diplomat, politician, and U.S. Army officer. He gained fame for his role as a Union general during the American Civil War. He was the victor at prominent battles in the Western theater of the American Civil War. However, his military career ended after his disastrous defeat at the Battle of Chickamauga in 1863. Rosecrans graduated in 1842 from the United States Military Academy, where he served in engineering assignments and was a professor before leaving the Army to pursue a career in civil engineering. At the start of the Civil War, he led troops from Ohio and achieved early combat success in western Virginia. In 1862, in the Western theater, he won the Battle of Iuka and the Second Battle of Corinth while under the command of Maj. Gen. Ulysses S. Grant. George Henry Thomas
George Henry Thomas (July 31, 1816March 28, 1870) was an American general in the Union Army during the American Civil War and one of the principal commanders in the Western Theater. Thomas served in the Mexican–American War, and despite being a Virginian whose home state would join the Confederate States of America during the Civil War, he was a Southern Unionist who chose to remain in the U.S. Army. Thomas won one of the first Union victories in the war, at Mill Springs in Kentucky, and served in important subordinate commands at Perryville and Stones River. Blanche Bruce
Blanche Kelso Bruce (March 1, 1841March 17, 1898) was an American politician who represented Mississippi as a Republican in the United States Senate from 1875 to 1881. Born into slavery in Prince Edward County, Virginia, he went on to become the first elected African-American senator to serve a full term ( Hiram R. J. Fount Tillman (1854 – March 1899) was an American politician who was the eighth Register of the Treasury, serving during the second term of President Grover Cleveland. As Register of the Treasury, Tillman's signature appeared on US currency issued between July 1, 1893, and December 2, 1897. Prior to working for the Treasury, Tillman served one term in the Tennessee State Legislature. He also served as the Secretary of the National Farmers' Alliance.
