Commonwealth Railways G Class
The Commonwealth Railways G class was a class of twenty-six tender locomotives of the Commonwealth Railways, Australia. The class operated between Port Augusta (later, Port Pirie) and Kalgoorlie on the Trans-Australian Railway. Kalgoorlie Railway Station
Kalgoorlie railway station is the easternmost attended station in Western Australia, located at the eastern terminus of the Eastern Goldfields Railway. It serves the city of Kalgoorlie. Cook is a railway station and crossing loop located in the Australian state of South Australia on the Trans-Australian Railway. It is by rail from Port Augusta, by rail from Kalgoorlie, and about north of the Eyre Highway via an unsealed road. The Eastern Goldfields Railway, was built in the 1890s by the Western Australian Government Railways to connect Perth with the Eastern Goldfields at Coolgardie and Kalgoorlie. It is a part of the interstate standard gauge railway between Perth and the rest of Australia. Originally, at construction, the railway line was referred to as the Yilgarn Railway, named after the Yilgarn Godlfields, but this was changed to Eastern Goldfields Railway around 1899 or 1900. It had also been referred to as the Fremantle–Kalgoorlie Railway. Operationally in the WAGR era, the line was considered to be between Northam and Kalgoorlie, despite historical material extending the name to Perth. Commonwealth Railways GM Class
The GM class are a class of diesel locomotives built by Clyde Engineering, Granville, New South Wales, Granville for the Commonwealth Railways in several batches between 1951 and 1967. As of January 2014, some remain in service with Aurizon and Southern Shorthaul Railroad. History The design was based on the Electro-Motive Diesel EMD F7 locomotive. The first 11 were delivered with EMD 567, EMD 16-567B, engines and four powered axles with the remainder having 16-567C, engines and six powered axles. The final 11 were fitted with dynamic braking.
