Trances (film)
''Trances'' (; ) is a 1981 documentary film about the influential Moroccan avant-pop band Nass El Ghiwane. It was shot, written, and directed by Ahmed El Maânouni. Summary The film is primarily composed of scenes portraying the band performing concerts in Morocco, interspersed with excerpts from interviews with band members about the meaning of their songs and music. The film also includes archival footage of colonial-era Morocco in the form of flashback sequences, as well as personal moments in the band members' daily lives. Production history Maânouni presented a working copy of the film to its eventual producer, Izza Génini (known for distributing musical films), at the first screening of his previous film Alyam, Alyam. After hearing Larbi Batma's voice and attending a concert held by the band, Génini offered her services to Maânouni as a producer. Ahmed El Maanouni
Ahmed El Maanouni (born in 1944) is a Moroccan screenwriter, film director, cinematographer, actor and producer. His films include '' Alyam Alyam'' (1978), the first Moroccan film to be selected in Cannes Film Festival and winner of the Grand Prize at the Mannheim Film Festival. He caught international attention when his film ''Trances'' was honored and presented by Martin Scorsese at the 2007 Cannes Film Festival to inaugurate the World Cinema Foundation. His film '' Les Coeurs brûlés'' (2007) won the Grand Prize at the National Film Festival and was awarded many international prizes. Izza Génini (born 1942) is a Moroccan movie producer and director. She has lived and worked in Paris, France since 1960. Biography Izza Génini was born in Casablanca, Morocco, in 1942 to a Jewish family. Souheil Ben-Barka (born 25 December 1942) is a Moroccan film director, screenwriter and film producer. He directed seven films between 1974 and 2002. His 1975 film ''La guerre du pétrole n'aura pas lieu'' was entered into the 9th Moscow International Film Festival. His 1983 film '' Amok'' won the Golden Prize at the 13th Moscow International Film Festival. In 1987 he was a member of the jury at the 15th Moscow International Film Festival. Nass El Ghiwane
Nass El Ghiwane () are a musical group established in 1970 in Casablanca, Morocco. The group, which originated in avant-garde political theater, has played an influential role in Moroccan chaabi (or ''shaabi''). Nass El Ghiwane were the first band to introduce Western instruments like the modern banjo. Their music incorporates a trance aesthetic, reflecting the influence of local gnawa music, and is inspired by ancient North African Sufi poetry, most prominently that of Abderrahman El Majdoub, whose work was a direct inspiration to the band. Larbi Batma
Laarbi Batma (or Laarbi Batma) ( ar, العربي باطما; born in Chaouia; 1948 - 7 February 1997) was a Moroccan musician, poet, singer, writer, actor, and the front man of the group Nass El Ghiwane. Early life Batma grew up in the Hay Mohammadi neighborhood in Casablanca. Batma was very much influenced by the music style of the mawsims of his native region that he used to frequent as a child. Nass El Ghiwane Batma was a founding member of Nass El Ghiwane. He was a vocalist and percussionist for the group until his death in 1997. He was considered the architect of the group.
