Thonon-les-Bains (; ), often simply referred to as Thonon, is a subprefecture of the Haute-Savoie department in the Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes region in Eastern France. In 2018, the commune had a population of 35,241. Thonon-les-Bains is part of a transborder metropolitan area known as Grand Genève. It is situated on the shores of Lake Geneva (, or simply ). History Thonon-les-Bains was the historic capital of Chablais, a province of the old Duchy of Savoy. The Chablais Savoyard is the portion of Chablais in France. The Funiculaire de Thonon-les-Bains, or Thonon-les-Bains Funicular, is a funicular, funicular railway in the spa town of Thonon-les-Bains, in the France, French ''departments of France, département'' of Haute-Savoie. The line links the Belvedere, in the city centre, to the port of Rives, on the shores of Lake Geneva. The funicular is managed by the ''Syndicat intercommunal des bus de l'agglomération thononaise'' (SIBAT), which is also responsible for the local bus service. It was opened in 1888. It has been renovated twice, first in 1951. After another renovation finished in 1989 a fully automated system designed by Poma was put into operation. It was the 1st of its kind in France. Arboretum De Ripaille
The Arboretum de Ripaille (53 hectares) is an arboretum and forest located on the grounds of the Château de Ripaille, Thonon-les-Bains, Haute-Savoie, Rhône-Alpes, France. It is open daily except Monday, but closed in December. The arboretum is set beside the Lake Geneva (Lac Léman), within the medieval hunting grounds of the Counts and Dukes of Savoy which are now surrounded by high walls and cut through with a web of wide allées. Its chateau was constructed in 1434 with partial restoration in 1892. From 1930 to 1934 Andrew Engel planted 58 species of trees, from around the world, across 19 hectares of these grounds. Heavy storms in 1999 severely damaged the arboretum, with restoration beginning in 2002. Since 1997 the ''Mémorial National des Justes de France'', honoring citizens who risked their lives saving Jews during World War II, has been set within the center of the arboretum. Mercer Island is a city in King County, Washington, United States, located on an island of the same name in the southern portion of Lake Washington. The title Duke of Chablais (, ) was a subsidiary title of the Duke of Savoy and later the King of Sardinia, both of the House of Savoy. The title is named after the province of Chablais, whose capital was Thonon-les-Bains. The title was granted four times to members of the Savoy family.
