The Tragically Hip EP
''The Tragically Hip'' is the first release from Canadian rock band The Tragically Hip. The EP was produced by Ken Greer of Red Rider fame, and consisted of 7 songs (8 on CD). Release and reception The Hip's EP was released in the Kingston area in late 1987 and nationally in January 1988. In early 1988 the Hip went on their first cross-Canada tour lasting 5 weeks. In Dec 1988 they signed a long-term contract with MCA. A live version of "Highway Girl" was released in 1991 as a B-side to " Twist My Arm", in which Gord Downie tells the story of a suicide pact between a man and his girlfriend. It was a hit on Canadian radio, allowing the song to chart considerably higher than in its original form. The story contains some lines which would later recur as lyrics in the band's 1992 single "Locked in the Trunk of a Car"; it ends with Downie exclaiming "Get Mr. Ry Cooder to deliver my eulogy", which would also recur in "At the Hundredth Meridian". The Tragically Hip
The Tragically Hip, often referred to simply as the Hip, were a Canadian rock band formed in Kingston, Ontario in 1984, consisting of vocalist Gord Downie, guitarist Paul Langlois, guitarist Rob Baker (known as Bobby Baker until 1994), bassist Gord Sinclair, and drummer Johnny Fay. They released 13 studio albums, one live album, one EP, and over 50 singles over a 33-year career. Nine of their albums have reached No. 1 on the Canadian charts. They have received numerous Canadian music awards, including 17 Juno Awards. Between 1996 and 2016, the Tragically Hip were the best-selling Canadian band in Canada and the fourth best-selling Canadian artist overall in Canada. Following Downie's diagnosis with terminal brain cancer in 2015, the band undertook a tour of Canada in support of their thirteenth album '' Man Machine Poem''. At The Hundredth Meridian
"At the Hundredth Meridian" is a song by Canadian rock band The Tragically Hip. It was released in April 1993 as the fourth single from the band's 1992 album, ''Fully Completely''. The song peaked at No. 18 on the Canadian ''RPM'' Singles chart. The song was also featured in the ''Due South'' episode "Heaven and Earth" in 1995. When performing the song live, the band would often play it at a significantly faster tempo than on the album, and would use the instrumental break for a jam session lasting several minutes. Content The song is a reference to the 100th meridian west, which is a line of longitude that separates much of Western Canada from the Central and Atlantic regions of Canada and is where the Great Plains begin, as lead-singer Gordon Downie states in the song. A backing vocalist is a singer who provides vocal harmony with the lead vocalist or other backing vocalists. Bass Guitar
The bass guitar, electric bass or simply bass (), is the lowest-pitched member of the string family. It is a plucked string instrument similar in appearance and construction to an electric or an acoustic guitar, but with a longer neck and scale length, and typically four to six strings or courses. In music performances, rhythm guitar is a technique and role that performs a combination of two functions: to provide all or part of the rhythmic pulse in conjunction with other instruments from the rhythm section (e.g., drum kit, bass guitar); and to provide all or part of the harmony, i.e. the chords from a song's chord progression, where a chord is a group of notes played together. Therefore, the basic technique of rhythm guitar is to hold down a series of chords with the fretting hand while strumming or fingerpicking rhythmically with the other hand. Rob Baker (guitarist)
Rob Baker (born April 12, 1962) is a Canadian guitarist, best known as the lead guitarist for the Canadian rock band The Tragically Hip. He has also released an album with the side project Stripper's Union in 2005. Life and career Baker was born in Kingston, Ontario. He is the son of the late Judge P.E.D. Baker. Baker is a former student of Queen's University where he studied visual art. Until the Tragically Hip's fifth release, '' Day for Night'', he was credited in the liner notes as Bobby Baker. Baker designed many of the Hip's T-shirts and album art. He was inducted—as a member of the Tragically Hip—to the Canadian Music Hall of Fame in April 2005 at the Juno Awards in Winnipeg, Manitoba. He was also one of the winners of a 1999 Juno Award for Best Album Design, for The Tragically Hip release '' Phantom Power''. ''Yer Favourites'' is a two-disc compilation album by the Tragically Hip. The tracks for ''Yer Favourites'' were selected by the band's fans on its website and were remastered. The compilation includes a total of seven songs from ''Fully Completely'' (the most songs of any album on the compilation), six songs from '' Road Apples'', five songs from ''Phantom Power'', four songs from ''Up to Here'', four songs from ''Day for Night'', two songs from ''Trouble at the Henhouse'', two songs from ''Music @ Work'', two songs from '' In Violet Light'', two songs from '' In Between Evolution'' and one song from the band's '' self-titled EP''. It also included two new songs, "No Threat" and "The New Maybe". It was released both as a stand-alone two-disc set and as part of the '' Hipeponymous'' box set. Ryland Peter "Ry" Cooder (born March 15, 1947) is an American musician, songwriter, film score composer, record producer, and writer. He is a multi-instrumentalist but is best known for his slide guitar work, his interest in traditional music, and his collaborations with traditional musicians from many countries.
