''The Mag'', known as ''Phonotonal'' since 2019, is an independent and alternative music magazine in the United Kingdom which has been published online since 2003. Contributions in the form of reviews and music articles were made by aspiring music journalists, photographers and enthusiasts such as Steve Fenton, Pete Habert, Stuart Smith and Mark Holloway. ''The Mag'' gained exposure in 2006 when the magazine's website became the largest of its kind (source Alexa Internet - Independent and Alternative Music) and it reached its peak in 2007, hosting an awards show that gained recognition from the BBC, as well as radio stations Original 106 (Solent) and Southern Counties Radio. History The magazine's first edition was published as an 8-page local music guide in Salisbury, Wiltshire. Alexa Internet, Inc. was a web traffic analysis company based in San Francisco, California. It was founded as an independent company by Brewster Kahle and Bruce Gilliat in 1996. Alexa provided web traffic data, global rankings, and other information on over 30 million websites. It was acquired by Amazon in 1999 for $250 million in stock. Amazon discontinued the Alexa Internet service on May 1, 2022. Alexa estimated website traffic based on a sample of millions of Internet users using browser extensions as well as from sites that had chosen to install an Alexa script. Original 106 (Solent)
Original 106fm was an Independent Local Radio station broadcasting to the Solent region of southern England, centred on the towns and cities of Portsmouth, Southampton and Bournemouth, from its transmitters at Chillerton Down, Mannings Heath (Poole) and Crabwood Farm (Winchester). It was awarded its broadcast licence in September 2005 and launched on 1 October 2006 and ceased broadcasting on 30 September 2008. The station broadcast an Adult Alternative format, with only 35% of its music coming from past or present Top 20 charts. ''Original 106fm'' was notable for holding the first United Kingdom broadcast licence to be awarded to an overseas group when Canwest won the licence in 2005. Delays
Delays are an English indie band formed in Southampton, which consisted of brothers Greg Gilbert and Aaron Gilbert, Colin Fox and Rowly until Greg Gilbert's death in 2021. The band's sound combines guitar and synths and featured Greg Gilbert's distinctive falsetto lead vocals. They have released four albums to date, the first three of which made the Top 30 in the UK Albums Chart. History The band were originally formed under the name Corky, citing amongst their influences British bands, Manic Street Preachers and The La's. Fiction Records is a British record label founded by Chris Parry in 1978, owned by Universal Music Group and based in the United Kingdom. It is best known for being the home of the Cure for over 20 years. It was originally a part of Polydor, but in January 2014, Universal restructured Fiction as a standalone label, removing it from Polydor's corporate affiliation. Fiction repertoire is now released internationally through Virgin (ex-North America).
