Tod Browning (born Charles Albert Browning Jr.; July 12, 1880 – October 6, 1962) was an American film director, film actor, screenwriter, vaudeville performer, and carnival sideshow and circus entertainer. He directed a number of films of various genres between 1915 and 1939, but was primarily known for horror films, and was often cited in the trade press as the Edgar Allan Poe of cinema. Browning's career spanned the silent film and sound film eras. He is known as the director of '' Dracula'' (1931), '' Freaks'' (1932), and his silent film collaborations with Lon Chaney and Priscilla Dean. William Lowery
William Lowery (July 22, 1885 – November 15, 1941) was an American silent film actor. He was born in St. Louis, Missouri, and was signed by the Thanhouser Company in 1914. Lowery's parents were actors, and he first acted at age 9. He enlisted in the Army in 1901 and fought during the Boxer uprising in China, achieving a commission as second lieutenant. He performed with a stock theater company in Los Angeles in 1906 before he began working in films. His first film was '' The Ten of Spades'' (1914) also starring William Garwood. He starred in about 60 films between 1914 and his retirement from film in 1927. He died on November 15, 1941, in Los Angeles. Mary Alden
Mary Maguire Alden (June 18, 1883 – July 2, 1946) was an American motion picture and stage actress. She was one of the first Broadway actresses to work in Hollywood. Life Alden was born in New York City on June 18, 1883. She performed on Broadway in ''Personal'' (1907) and ''The Rule of Three'' (1914). She worked for the Biograph Company and Pathé Exchange in the first portion of her career. Her most popular role in movies came in ''The Birth of a Nation'' directed by D.W. Griffith in 1915. Alden played the role of a mulatto woman in love with a northern politician. The following year she was in Griffith's '' Intolerance'' with Mae Marsh, Miriam Cooper, and Vera Lewis. After making ''Less Than The Dust'' with Mary Pickford in 1917, she took a temporary leave from motion pictures, acting for a while on the stage. Margery Wilson (born ''Sara Barker Strayer''; October 31, 1896 – January 21, 1986) was an American actress, writer, and silent movie director. She appeared in 51 films between 1914 and 1939. Early life and education Wilson was born in Gracey, Kentucky as Sara Barker Strayer, the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Holmes B. Strayer. She received higher education in philosophy and literature while also pursuing social service work. Starting out, Wilson gave public performances in Cincinnati at clubs, schools, and churches. Later, she was able to tour from Ohio to Atlanta with the John Lawrence Players as the leading lady. By the age of 16, she founded her own theater company. She and her sister left for London on a world tour as musical entertainers. She changed her name when she was 16 because her relatives disliked having the family name associated with acting. Vester Pegg
Vester Pegg (May 23, 1889 – February 19, 1951) was an American actor of the silent film era. He appeared in 140 films between 1912 and 1941, mainly Westerns. He was born in Appleton City, Missouri and died in Los Angeles, California. Pegg became a picador in 1909, working in a bull ring in Mexico City. He left that job after a bull charged and killed the horse on which Pegg was riding. He moved to California, where he began acting in stock theater. After 18 months of acting on stage, he began acting in films, eventually signing with Universal Pictures, where he worked with Harry Carey's company.
