The Good Old Soak
''The Good Old Soak'' is a 1937 drama film starring Wallace Beery and directed by J. Walter Ruben from a screenplay by A. E. Thomas based upon the 1922 stage play of the same name by Don Marquis. The picture's supporting cast features Una Merkel, Eric Linden, Betty Furness, and Ted Healy. Screenwriter Thomas was disturbed that MGM changed the title from the original "The Old Soak," to the "Good Old Soak." MGM did that because it felt Wallace Beery's fans considered the word "good" synonymous with Beery. Rollin Kirby, a distinguished political cartoonist on the ''New York World'' newspaper, and good friend of Don Marquis, got a laugh from Marquis when he suggested how appropriate it was that a man named Beery would portray the Old Soak himself. The story was previously made as a silent film by Universal in 1926 called ''The Old Soak'' starring Jean Hersholt. Ted Healy
Ted Healy (born Charles Ernest Lee Nash; October 1, 1896 – December 21, 1937) was an American vaudeville performer, comedian, and actor. Though he is chiefly remembered as the creator of The Three Stooges and the style of slapstick comedy that they later made famous, he had a successful stage and film career of his own and was cited as a formative influence by several later comedy stars. Early life Sources conflict on Healy's precise birth name and birthplace, but according to baptismal records, he was born Ernest (or Earnest) Lea Nash on October 1, 1896, in Kaufman, Texas, to Charles McKinney Nash and Mary Eugenia (McGinty) Nash. George Sidney (actor)
George Sidney (born Sammy Greenfield; 18 March 1876 – 29 April 1945) was a Hungarian-born American comedian and film actor. He starred in The Cohens and Kellys film series.Kear & King p.203 Early years Born in Nagynichal, Hungary, Sidney was the son of Lewis K. Sidney, an executive at Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer. He was the uncle of the film director George Sidney. Career In his youth, Sidney performed on amateur night programs at Miner's Bowery Theatre in New York City.
