The Elephant Calf
''The Elephant Calf'' (German: ''Das Elefantenkalb''), also known as ''The Baby Elephant'', is an early one-act surrealistic prose farce written by the German modernist playwright Bertolt Brecht. It originally formed the penultimate scene of Brecht's full-length play '' Man Equals Man'', but by 1926 Brecht had separated it to an appendix to the published text. It was performed as part of '' Man Equals Man'' that same year. Eugen Berthold Friedrich Brecht (10 February 1898 – 14 August 1956), known as Bertolt Brecht and Bert Brecht, was a German theatre practitioner, playwright, and poet. ''Man Equals Man'' (), or ''A Man's a Man'', is a play by the German modernist playwright Bertolt Brecht. One of Brecht's earlier works, it explores themes of war, human fungibility, and identity. A story within a story, also referred to as an embedded narrative, is a literary device in which a character within a story becomes the narrator of a second story (within the first one). Multiple layers of stories within stories are sometimes called nested stories.
