The Druid Order
The Druid Order is a Neo-Druidism, contemporary druidry fraternal order, founded in 1909 by George Watson MacGregor Reid in the United Kingdom. At various times it has also been known as The Ancient Druid Order, An Druidh Uileach Braithreachas, and The British Circle of the Universal Bond. Initiated members are called companions. Activity Meditation is a key activity. Druidic discussions typically cover personal experience as well as philosophical, biological, mythological, political, poetic, astrological, religious, and similar subjects. Druidry, sometimes termed Druidism, is a modern spirituality, spiritual or religion, religious movement that promotes the cultivation of honorable relationships with the physical landscapes, flora, fauna, and diverse peoples of the world, as well as with nature deities, and spirits of nature and place. Theological beliefs among modern Druids are diverse; however, all modern Druids venerate the divine essence of nature. Ross Nichols
Philip Peter Ross Nichols (28 June 1902 – 30 April 1975) was a Cambridge academic and published poet, artist and historian, who founded the Order of Bards, Ovates and Druids in 1964. He wrote prolifically on the subjects of Druidism and Celtic mythology. Work He revived the interest in Celtic neopaganism and Druidry in the 20th century. Nichols was a Member and Chairman of the Druid Order which traces its lineage to a meeting at the Apple Tree Tavern in Covent Garden, London, in 1717, although Professor Ronald Hutton has demonstrated that it only dates back to 1906, the 1717 story being a modification of the founding of modern Freemasonry. George Watson MacGregor-Reid
George Watson MacGregor-Reid (died 12 August 1946) was a Scottish modern Druid and union activist. He established and led the Church of the Universal Bond. Little is known of his early life and birth, but MacGregor-Reid came to work on the sea and by 1888 he was involved in seaman trade union activities. He played a significant role in promoting modern Druidry. The Order of Bards, Ovates & Druids or OBOD is a Neo-Druidic order based in England, but based in part on the Welsh Gorsedd of Bards. It has grown to become a dynamic druid organisation, with members in all parts of the world. The concept of the three roles of bards, ovates and druids originates from the writings of the ancient Greek historian and geographer Strabo, who in his ''Geographica'', written in the 20s CE, stated that amongst the Gauls, there were three types of honoured figures: the poets and singers known as ''bardoi'', the diviners and specialists in the natural world known as ''o'vateis'', and those who studied "moral philosophy", the ''druidai''.
