The Big Green Bus
The Big Green Bus (BGB) is a project run by Dartmouth College students, for the purpose of promoting sustainability and renewable energy sources. Founded in 2005, the project successfully converted a used school bus to run on vegetable oil waste. In 2009 the project was able to upgrade, converting an MCI coach bus to run on VWO. The BGB is part of the Dartmouth Outing Club and is entirely student-run. In addition to participating in various public events, the BGB brings their educational presentations to schools, camps and other gatherings , where participants are educated on managing environmental projects. The BGB's website provides additional educational resources and tips. BGB is fueled by vegetable oil waste (VOW), and can travel approximately 1,500 miles on a full 300 gallon tank. Sustainability is a social goal for people to co-exist on Earth over a long period of time. Definitions of this term are disputed and have varied with literature, context, and time. Sustainability usually has three dimensions (or pillars): environmental, economic, and social. Many definitions emphasize the environmental dimension. This can include addressing key environmental problems, including climate change and biodiversity loss. The idea of sustainability can guide decisions at the global, national, organizational, and individual levels. Renewable energy (also called green energy) is energy made from renewable resource, renewable natural resources that are replenished on a human lifetime, human timescale. The most widely used renewable energy types are solar energy, wind power, and hydropower. Bioenergy and geothermal power are also significant in some countries. Motor Coach Industries (MCI) is an American multinational bus manufacturer, specializing in production of motorcoaches. Best known for coaches produced for intercity transit and commuter buses, MCI produces coaches for a variety of applications, ranging from tour buses to prison buses. Dartmouth Outing Club
The Dartmouth Outing Club (DOC) is a collegiate outing club in the United States. Proposed in 1909 by Dartmouth College student Fred Harris to "stimulate interest in out-of-door winter sports", the club soon grew to encompass the college's year-round outdoor recreation and has had a major role in defining Dartmouth College. Today the club has over 1500 student members (and almost as many non-student members) and acts as an umbrella organization for over twenty member clubs, committees, and divisions that each specialize in an aspect of outdoor recreation. Previously among them was the Dartmouth Ski Team whose members have participated in 25 Olympic Games, beginning with John B. Carleton, who as a member of the Dartmouth class of 1922 competed in Chamonix in cross country and Nordic combined.
