''The Automatic Box'' is a four-disc box set by R.E.M., released in Germany in December 1993. It was primarily a collection of B-sides from '' Automatic for the People'', though disc four contains B-sides from ''Green''-era singles (then collected on the 7" vinyl box set ''Singleactiongreen''). "It's a Free World Baby", "Fretless", "Mandolin Strum", and "Organ Song" were outtakes recorded during '' Out of Time'' recording sessions. This is part of a Warner Bros. Alternative Rock
Alternative rock (also known as alternative music, alt-rock or simply alternative) is a category of rock music that evolved from the independent music underground of the 1970s. Alternative rock acts achieved mainstream success in the 1990s with the likes of the grunge subgenre in the United States, and the Britpop and shoegaze subgenres in the United Kingdom and Ireland. During this period, many record labels were looking for "alternatives", as many Arena rock, corporate rock, hard rock, and glam metal acts from the 1980s were beginning to grow stale throughout the music industry. The emergence of Generation X as a Culture, cultural force in the 1990s also contributed greatly to the rise of alternative music. "Alternative" refers to the genre's distinction from mainstream or arena rock, commercial rock or pop. Dark Globe
"Dark Globe" (also known as "Wouldn't You Miss Me") is a song by Syd Barrett, released on his first solo album ''The Madcap Laughs''. Recording Syd Barrett recorded "Dark Globe" and other songs during a session held on 12 June 1969, with producers David Gilmour and Roger Waters. Despite both Gilmour and Waters' considering the song finished, Barrett recorded the song a third time towards the end of the session. The version recorded at the start of the session was the one released on the finished album. On 26 July 1969 Barrett recorded "Dark Globe" again. This take was titled "Wouldn't You Miss Me" on the recording sheet. The track, along with two others, was mixed on 6 August of the same year. Funtime (Iggy Pop Song)
"Funtime" is a song written by Iggy Pop and David Bowie, first released by Iggy Pop on his 1977 album entitled ''The Idiot''. It reflects Iggy and Bowie's growing fascination with the German music scene, and bears marked similarities to "Lila Engel" by krautrock band Neu!. It has since been covered by multiple artists including Blondie, Boy George, Bebe Buell, Peter Murphy, R.E.M. and The Cars. Composition Iggy had the idea for the song after hearing the Sex Pistols cover the song " No Fun" by his band The Stooges, lyrically the song's ironic take on fun is similar to the song in question. David Bowie wrote the music as well as plays guitar, synthesizers, piano and sings the main chorus on the track. Alan Bermowitz (June 23, 1938–July 16, 2016), known professionally as Alan Vega, was an American vocalist and visual artist, primarily known for his work with the electronic proto-punk duo Suicide. Martin Reverby, better known by his stage name Martin Rev, (born December 18, 1947) is an American musician who was one half of the influential synth-punk band Suicide. Rev has also released several solo albums for a number of record labels, including ROIR and Puu. His style varies widely from release to release, from harsh and abrasive no wave (''Martin Rev'') to light bubblegum pop (''Strangeworld'') to heavy synthesizer rock (''To Live''). George David Weiss
George David Weiss (April 9, 1921 – August 23, 2010) was an American songwriter and arranger, who was a president of the Songwriters Guild of America. He is an inductee in the Songwriters Hall of Fame. Biography Weiss was born in a Jewish family and originally planned a career as a lawyer or accountant; however, out of a love for music, he was led to attend the Juilliard School of Music, developing his skills in writing and arranging. Hugo Peretti
Hugo E. Peretti (December 6, 1916 – May 1, 1986) was an American songwriter, trumpeter, and record producer. Born in New York City to an Italian American family, Peretti began his music career as a teenager, playing the trumpet in the Borscht Belt in upstate New York. He graduated to playing with orchestras, then in the 1950s partnered with his cousin Luigi Creatore to form the Hugo & Luigi songwriting team that evolved to producing records.
