Thaicom Public Company Limited is a Thai satellite operator and provider of satellite and telecommunication services since 1991. The company operates a fleet of four satellites covering Asia, Oceania, and Africa. Thaicom is a subsidiary of Intouch Holdings, Intouch Holdings PCL, Thailand's biggest telecommunications conglomerate. History The company's satellite project was named Thaicom by King Bhumibol. Thailand-based Shin Corporation, Shinawatra Computer and Communications Co. Ltd. (later Intouch Holdings PLC) signed a US$100 million contract with Hughes Aircraft, Hughes Space and Communications Company Ltd. in 1991 to build Thailand's first communications satellite. Thaicom 5
Thaicom 5 was a geostationary communications satellite operated by Thaicom. It was used to provide communications services to Asia, Africa, Middle East, Americas, Europe and Australia. Overview Thaicom 5 was constructed by Alcatel Alenia Space, and is based on the Spacebus 3000A satellite bus, with a configuration identical to the Thaicom 3 satellite which it replaced. It was originally ordered as Thaicom 4, but sold to Agrani as Agrani 2 before completion. It was completed in 1997, and stored until June 2005 when it was cancelled and sold back to Thaicom. It was equipped with 25 G/H band (IEEE C band) and 14 J band (IEEE Ku band) transponders, and at launch it had a mass of , with an expected operational lifespan of 12 years. THAICOM 6 () is a Thai satellite of the Thaicom series, operated by Thaicom Public Company Limited, a subsidiary of INTOUCH headquartered in Bangkok, Thailand. THAICOM 4, also known as IPSTAR 1, is a high throughput satellite built by Space Systems/Loral (SS/L) for Thaicom Public Company Limited. It was launched on August 11, 2005, from the European Space Agency's spaceport in French Guiana on board the Ariane rocket. The satellite had a launch mass of 6486 kilograms and is from SS/L's LS-1300 series of spacecraft. IPSTAR 1 is the world's first High Throughput Satellite capable of providing service to up to two million broadband users or nearly 30 million mobile phone subscribers in the Asia Pacific region. Compared to the one or two gigabit per second (Gbit/s) capacity of a typical satellite designed for Fixed Satellite Services (FSS), IPSTAR was designed to provide broadband Internet service.
