Tedd Browne
Tedd Browne (August 23, 1929 in Estill, South Carolina – July 27, 1968 in Cleveland Heights, Ohio) was an American singer songwriter. He was shot and killed while returning from a gig. Browne graduated from high school in Brooklyn, NY, attended Hastings College in Nebraska, and San Francisco College. He lived in Savannah, Georgia, New York City, NY, Lake George, New York, and Cleveland, Ohio; he served in the US Navy. Browne appeared on ''The Tonight Show'' starring Jack Paar and ''The Mike Douglas Show''. On January 20, 1965, he sang at President Lyndon B. Johnson’s inaugural ball. He was married to Inez Browne and had three children. In 1968 Browne was shot and killed while stopped at a traffic light while returning from a gig at the Cabaret Lounge; ''Billboard'' attributed his killing to earlier rioting in Cleveland that week. Estill, South Carolina
Estill is a town in Hampton County, South Carolina, United States. The population was 2,040 at the 2010 census. Geography Estill is located north of Savannah, Georgia, northwest of Hilton Head Island and west of Charleston. The major industries are timber and agriculture. History The town of Estill is located in the southern half of Hampton County. The town is named for Colonel John Holbrook Estill. Estill was formed in 1900 when the railroad, later Seaboard Air Line Railroad, needed a rail line between Augusta, Georgia and Savannah, Georgia. Upon construction of the rail line, the new town of Estill was incorporated in 1905. The John Lawton House and Lawtonville Baptist Church are listed on the National Register of Historic Places. The Mike Douglas Show
''The Mike Douglas Show'' is an American daytime television talk show that was hosted by Mike Douglas. It began as a local program in Cleveland in 1961 before being carried on other stations owned by Westinghouse Broadcasting. The show went into national syndication and was moved to Philadelphia in 1965. The program ran until 1981. It was distributed by Westinghouse Broadcasting, and for much of its run, originated from studios at two of the company's TV stations in Cleveland and Philadelphia. National Recording Corporation was an American record label, established in Atlanta in 1958. Background The company was created by disc jockey Bill Lowery. The premises were at the old Brookhaven School building. The company recorded and pressed albums. A part of the business was shut down in 1961, but founder Lowery kept a recording studio for the company. Artists to have recorded with the company include Joe South and Jerry Reed. History Bill Lowery who was a producer and a group of businessmen founded the company in 1958. The first release was "The Rock-A-Round" bw "Sweet Skinny Jenny" which was released on NRC 001. It was actually recorded at WGST. Sales from the record enabled them to set up their own studio and pressing facilities. Jubilee Records
Jubilee Records was an American independent record label, specializing in rhythm and blues and novelty records. It was founded in New York City in 1946 by Herb Abramson. His partner was Jerry Blaine. Blaine bought Abramson's half of the company in 1947, when Abramson went on to co-found Atlantic Records with Ahmet Ertegun. The company name was Jay-Gee Recording Company, a subsidiary of the Cosnat Corporation. Cosnat was a wholesale record distributor. History Jubilee was the first independent record label to reach the white market with a black vocal group, when the Orioles' recording of "Crying in the Chapel" reached the Top Twenty on the Pop chart in 1953. Jack Harold Paar (May 1, 1918 – January 27, 2004) was an American talk show host, writer, radio and television comedian, and film actor. He was the second host of ''The Tonight Show'' from 1957 to 1962. Cleveland Heights, Ohio
Cleveland Heights is a city in Cuyahoga County, Ohio, United States. The population was 45,312 at the 2020 census. One of Cleveland's historic streetcar suburbs, it was founded as a village in 1903 and a city in 1921. History The area that is now the city of Cleveland Heights lies atop the Portage Escarpment. Until the late 1800s, the area remained largely timber and farmland, with a few orchards, quarries, and vineyards. The first road through the city, Mayfield Road, was not built until 1828. Some of the land was divided into farms, but it also had quarries in the 19th century. One of the early quarries was established by Duncan McFarland who mined bluestone.
