Taras Vintsiuk
Taras Klymovych Vintsiuk (sometimes also spelled as 'Vintsyuk'; ; 10 March 1939, Kulchyn – 29 May 2012, Kyiv) was a Ukrainian pioneer in pattern recognition theory. He authored fundamental works in the field of speech recognition, and was an initiator and organizer of the State R&D Program. He was the originator of the "pattern recognition generative model" research school. He served as founder and president (till 2012) of the Ukrainian Association for Information Processing and Pattern Recognition (UAsIPPR). Early life Taras Vintsiuk was born on 10 March 1939 in Kulchyn, Volyn' oblast. In the postwar years he lived in an orphanage and later with relatives. In 1956 he graduated with a golden medal. The ''Encyclopedia of Modern Ukraine'' (), abbreviated EMU, is a multi-volume national encyclopedia of Ukraine. It is an academic project of the Institute of Encyclopaedic Research of the National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine. Today, the reference work is available in a print edition and online. Hidden Markov Model
A hidden Markov model (HMM) is a Markov model in which the observations are dependent on a latent (or ''hidden'') Markov process (referred to as X). An HMM requires that there be an observable process Y whose outcomes depend on the outcomes of X in a known way. Since X cannot be observed directly, the goal is to learn about state of X by observing Y. By definition of being a Markov model, an HMM has an additional requirement that the outcome of Y at time t = t_0 must be "influenced" exclusively by the outcome of X at t = t_0 and that the outcomes of X and Y at t < t_0 must be conditionally independent of at given at time . Dynamic Time Warping
In time series analysis, dynamic time warping (DTW) is an algorithm for measuring similarity between two temporal sequences, which may vary in speed. For instance, similarities in walking could be detected using DTW, even if one person was walking faster than the other, or if there were accelerations and decelerations during the course of an observation. DTW has been applied to temporal sequences of video, audio, and graphics data — indeed, any data that can be turned into a one-dimensional sequence can be analyzed with DTW. IEEE Computer Pioneer Award
The Computer Pioneer Award was established in 1981 by the Board of Governors of the IEEE Computer Society to recognize and honor the vision of those people whose efforts resulted in the creation and continued vitality of the computer industry. Viktor Hlushkov
Victor Mikhailovich Glushkov (; August 24, 1923 – January 30, 1982) was a Soviet computer scientist. He is considered to be the founding father of information technology in the Soviet Union and one of the founding fathers Soviet cybernetics. Biography He was born in Rostov-on-Don, Russian SFSR, in the family of a mining engineer. Glushkov graduated from Rostov State University in 1948, and in 1952 proposed solutions to Hilbert's fifth problem and defended his thesis at Moscow State University. In 1956, he began working with computers and worked in Kiev as a Director of the Computational Center of the Academy of Science of Ukraine. In 1958, he became a member of the Communist Party. In 1962, Glushkov established the famous Institute of Cybernetics of the National Academy of Science of Ukraine and became its first director. He made contributions to the theory of automata.
