Surgeon-General (United Kingdom)
The Surgeon-General of the United Kingdom Armed Forces is the most senior uniformed medical officer in the British Armed Forces. Army The post of Surgeon-General dates from 1664; there was also, from 1685, a Physician-General appointed; together, they directed the Army's medical services. These offices lapsed following the establishment of the Army Medical Department in 1810; but in 1874, the title of surgeon-general was reinstated as the highest rank for military medical officers. The rank of deputy surgeon-general was also introduced, although it was redesignated surgeon-colonel from 7 August 1891. In 1918, surgeon-general was redesignated as the standard Army rank of major-general, except for the most senior surgeon-general, who was redesignated a lieutenant-general. Peter Beale (British Army Officer)
Lieutenant General Sir Peter John Beale, (born 18 March 1934) is a retired military physician. He was the Surgeon-General of the British Armed Forces from 1991 to 1994. He also served as the Chief Medical Adviser to the British Red Cross from 1994 to 2000. Early life Beale was born on 18 March 1934 to Basil and Eileen Beale. He was educated at St Paul's Cathedral School, an Independent preparatory school in the City of London, and on a music scholarship at Felsted School, a public school in Felsted, Essex. Following his preclinical studies, he received a Bachelor of Arts from Gonville and Caius College, University of Cambridge, which he attended as a choral scholar. In 1958, he qualified by graduating Bachelor of Medicine, Bachelor of Surgery from Westminster Hospital Medical School. Air Vice-Marshal Richard John Martin Broadbridge, 5th Baron Broadbridge, (born 20 January 1959), is a British physician, senior Royal Air Force officer, and hereditary peer. Having joined the RAF in 1981, he rose to serve as Director Healthcare Delivery and Training, Defence Medical Services from 2014 to 2018 and acting Surgeon General in 2017. He transferred to the Royal Air Force Reserve on 5 February 2018, and succeeded his father as Baron Broadbridge in 2020. Surgeon Vice-Admiral Alasdair James Walker, (22 June 1956 – 1 June 2019) was a British medical doctor and senior Royal Navy officer. He served as Surgeon-General of the British Armed Forces. Early life and education From 1965 to 1974, Walker was educated at the High School of Glasgow, then a grammar school in Glasgow, Scotland. From 1974 to 1979, he studied medicine at the University of Glasgow, and graduated with Bachelor of Medicine, Bachelor of Surgery degrees. Air Marshal Christopher Paul Anthony Evans, (born 1954) is a former senior Royal Air Force officer and medical doctor. He served as Surgeon General of the British Armed Forces from 2012 to 2015. Early life Evans was born in 1954. He graduated from the Welsh National School of Medicine in 1978 Bachelor of Medicine, Bachelor of Surgery. Military career On 18 November 1975, Evans was commissioned into the Medical Branch of the Royal Air Force as a pilot officer. He was given the service number 5203329. Surgeon Vice Admiral Ian Lawrence Jenkins (12 September 1944 – 19 February 2009) was a Royal Navy medical officer and former Surgeon General of the British Armed Forces.
