Succumbs
''Succumbs'' was R.E.M.'s first commercially available full-length movie. Released in October 1987 by UNI/A&M, it contains video footage shot by R.E.M.'s lead singer Michael Stipe dating back to the early-1980s, while the band was still recording under the I.R.S. Records label. Stipe collaborated with local Athens, Georgia artist James Herbert, who directed Left of Reckoning. ''Succumbs'' offers a glimpse of the unique feel of the band before their commercial success. It was released only on VHS and laserdisc, however, all the videos contained in this package are included on the '' When the Light Is Mine'' DVD, released in September 2006. An introductory clip at the beginning of the collection features guitarist Peter Buck and the band's then-manager, Jefferson Holt, introducing "citizens of the future" to an "outmoded artform" called the "video", predicting it would have a staying power similar to that of Nehru jackets and other forgotten fads. ''Document'' is the fifth studio album by American rock band R.E.M., released in September, 1987, by I.R.S. Records. It was the first album by the band to be produced by Scott Litt. Continuing in the vein of their previous album '' Lifes Rich Pageant'', ''Document'' features more audible lyrics and a harder rock sound in comparison to the band's earlier releases. ''Eponymous'' is the first greatest hits album by the American alternative rock band R.E.M., released in 1988. It was their last authorized release on I.R.S. Records, to whom they had been contracted since 1982, having just signed with Warner Bros. Records. ''Eponymous'' includes several alternative versions of songs, including the soundtrack contribution "Romance", which had not previously appeared on an R.E.M. record. ''Tourfilm'' (1990) is a documentary-style concert film by American rock band R.E.M. The film chronicles the band's 1989 ''Green'' tour of North America. Produced by frontman Michael Stipe and director Jim McKay, the black-and-white film features aspects of avant-garde and experimental filmmaking, including handheld camera shots and stock footage. Unlike most films of its genre, ''Tourfilm'' is noticeably devoid of standard rock movie staples such as backstage footage and interviews with band members. "Driver 8" is the second single from American musical group R.E.M.'s third album, ''Fables of the Reconstruction''. Released in September 1985, the song peaked at number 22 on the U.S. ''Billboard'' Mainstream Rock Tracks chart. It was not released in Europe and did not chart in the United States. The song refers to the Southern Crescent, a passenger train that was operated by the Southern Railroad until 1979, and continues today (with fewer stops) as the Amtrak ''Crescent''. The music video shows Chessie System trains running around Clifton Forge, Virginia. "Cant Get There from Here", or "Can't Get There from Here", is the first single released by R.E.M. from its third studio album ''Fables of the Reconstruction'' in 1985.
