Stone Valley Recreation Area
Stone Valley Recreation Area is an outdoor recreational and educational facility operated by Pennsylvania State University. It is located in Huntingdon County, Pennsylvania, Huntingdon County near the village of Mooresville, Pennsylvania, Mooresville. The property is located over the mountain from the village of Pine Grove Mills, Pennsylvania, along Shaver's Creek. Hiking and fishing are among the activities available to visitors. Pennsylvania State University contracted with the federal government in 1940 to construct roads and buildings on the land to help the school's educational program. In 1954 the land was given fully to the university. A dam was finished in 1960 to give easy access to the area, and Stone Valley Recreation Area was created. Pine Grove Mills is an unincorporated community and census-designated place (CDP) in Ferguson Township, Centre County, Pennsylvania, United States. It is part of the State College, Pennsylvania Metropolitan Statistical Area. The population was 1,502 at the 2010 census. Geography Pine Grove Mills is located in southern Centre County at (40.735391, -77.884043), near the southern border of Ferguson Township, which is the Centre County/ Huntingdon County line. The town is in the Nittany Valley at the base of Tussey Mountain, a long ridge that in part forms the southern edge of the valley. Shaver's Creek Environmental Center
Shaver's Creek Environmental Center is located between State College and Huntingdon, Pennsylvania, in the Stone Valley Recreation Area. This is part of the Penn State Experimental Forest. The center operates on and contains , freshwater Lake Perez. Each year more than 100,000 people visit the center, which is open daily from February 1 to December 15 (excluding Thanksgiving). The Environmental Center contains an amphitheater; classrooms; Welcome Center, Pennsylvania Nature Book and Gift Shop; herb and flower gardens; picnic areas; raptor center; and other displays and exhibits.
