Nederland 24 was the collective name for a number of specialty television channels from the Dutch public broadcasting system. It also broadcasts a sample channel of the same name featuring a mix of programming from the other thematic channels. A couple of these specialty channel are still available, but are now fully under the wings of the NPO. Originally it consisted of seventeen channels which were available through cable and online (cf. Overview The ''Nederland 24'' channels were an expansion of the Dutch public broadcasting system, in which public broadcasting associations provide general programming. Based on the number of active members, broadcasting associations receive airtime on three national public television stations (NPO 1, NPO 2 and NPO 3). The thematic channels offered these broadcasting associations more airtime to expand its core programming. These channels broadcast round-the-clock, all day, hence the "24" part of the name. Television In The Netherlands
Television in the Netherlands was officially introduced in 1951. In the Netherlands, the television market is divided between a number of commercial networks, such as RTL Nederland, and a system of public broadcasters sharing three channels, NPO 1, NPO 2, and NPO 3. Imported programmes (except those for children), as well as news interviews with responses in a foreign language, are almost always shown in their original language, with subtitles. Reception In the Netherlands, television can be watched analog or digital (the latter with the option of HDTV or UHD). Over 2018, 89.2% of Dutch viewers received television digitally. Analogue television is only available via some cable operators and some fiber to the home providers, since the Dutch government ended analogue reception via airwaves in 2006. The Dutch public broadcasting system ( nl, Nederlands publieke omroepbestel) is a group of organizations that are responsible for public service television and radio broadcasting in the Netherlands. It is composed of the Nederlandse Publieke Omroep (NPO) foundation, which acts as its governing body, and a number of public broadcasters. The Dutch ''Media Act 2008'' regulates how air time is divided and puts the administration of the public broadcasting system in the hands of the NPO Board of Directors. NPO 1 Extra
NPO 1 Extra is a television channel jointly operated by Dutch public broadcasters AVROTROS, BNNVARA, EO, KRO-NCRV and MAX. It was originally launched as HilversumBest on 1 December 2006. NPO 1 Extra presents highlights of more than sixty years of Dutch television history. The channel was founded by Han Peekel. History In April 2009, HilversumBest was renamed as Best24. On 10 March 2014 the channel changed its name to NPO Best. On 26 March 2018 the channel was renamed as NPO 1 Extra. Digital Television In The Netherlands
The Netherlands now has three major forms of broadcast digital television. Terrestrial (DVB-T), Cable (DVB-C), and Satellite (DVB-S). In addition IPTV services are available. At the end of the first quarter of 2013 almost 84% of the households in the Netherlands had some form of digital television. Terrestrial The Netherlands was the second European country to complete the move to digital terrestrial broadcasting on December 11, 2006. The switch-off was helped greatly by the fact that about 90% of the households have cable that continues to use analog distribution. Due to the very extensive penetration of cable systems, usage of terrestrial television in the Netherlands is largely confined to remote rural areas and for portable televisions in caravans, etc. Since then all terrestrial television broadcast in the Netherlands are digital. NPO Humor TV
NPO Humor TV was a digital theme channel of the Netherlands Public Broadcasting dedicated to comedy, cabaret and satire. The channel started as Humor TV on 15 November 2006. On 10 March 2014, Humor TV 24 changed its name to NPO Humor TV. By cuts in public broadcasting NPO Humor TV would stop broadcasting on 1 July 2016. Arise Humor TV was founded on 15 November 2006. It began as an Internet channel of the former Nederland 4. It then was a channel owned by the VARA. After several years, they also started broadcasting via digital TV, where they also went broadcasting twenty-four hours a day, with which the name is changed in Humor TV 24. NPO 3 Extra
NPO 3 Extra was a Dutch digital theme channel of Dutch public broadcaster BNNVARA, which has been broadcasting since 31 October 2006. The channel could be received via the Internet, as well as digital theme channel via a decoder to the TV. On 10 March 2014, the channel was renamed by NPO 101, before it was called ''101 TV''. The channel was mainly aimed at a young audience (13–34 years) and broadcasts programmes for this target group 24 hours a day. The programmes that are broadcast partly repeats of (especially) BNNVARA programmes and other broadcasters, but also new (experimental) programmes who still can not hear or visit an "open channel". Interaction with the viewers should be an important element in the future types of NPO 101. NPO Zappelin Extra
NPO Zappelin Extra was a digital theme TV channel jointly operated by AVROTROS, EO, KRO-NCRV, NTR and VPRO. The TV channel launched as Zappelin 24 on 30 May 2009. It broadcasts replays and broadcasts from NPO Zapp and NPO Zappelin, via the cable and internet. The TV channel was part of the Nederlandse Publieke Omroep. On 10 March 2014, Z@ppelin / Z@pp 24 changed its name into NPO Zapp Xtra. NPO Zapp Xtra became a 24-hour channel on 25 December 2018 and was renamed NPO Zappelin Extra. NPO Zapp Xtra used to time-share with NPO 1 Extra until 25 December 2018 and has since taken over the former frequency of the defunct channel, NPO 3 Extra. NPO 2 Extra is a 24-hour public television channel from the Netherlands Public Broadcasting, NPO, devoted to documentaries, art and culture. Most programmes are supplied by Omroep NTR, NTR, AVROTROS, BNNVARA, KRO-NCRV, Evangelische Omroep, EO and VPRO. Topics covered include art, film, dance, theatre, literature, jazz and classical music. NPO Politiek en Nieuws is a public television channel operated by the public broadcaster NOS, which supplies news and sports to all national public television and radio networks. Programmes come live from The Hague when the parliament is in session. When the parliament was not in session the ''NPO Politiek en Nieuws'' channel became ''NPO Sport'', broadcasting sporting events or news and current affairs, supplied by the NOS. On 15 December 2021, NPO Nieuws merged with NPO Politiek to make the present name of this channel. Before 10 March 2014 the channel was called Politiek 24.
