Stephen Edward Biegun (born March 30, 1963) is an American businessman and diplomat who served as the United States Deputy Secretary of State, United States deputy secretary of state from December 2019 to January 2021 and United States Special Representative for North Korea from August 2018 to January 2021, vice president of international governmental affairs for the Ford Motor Company, staffer on the United States National Security Council, National Security Council, as well as national security adviser to Senator Bill Frist. Early life and education Biegun was born in Detroit, Michigan. He earned a Bachelor of Arts degree in Russian and political science from the University of Michigan in 1984. United States Deputy Secretary Of State
The deputy secretary of state of the United States is the principal deputy to the secretary of state. The current deputy secretary of state is Wendy Ruth Sherman, serving since April 2021 under secretary of state Antony Blinken. If the secretary of state resigns or dies, the deputy secretary of state becomes acting secretary of state until the president nominates and the Senate confirms a replacement. The position was created in 1972. Prior to July 13, 1972, the under secretary of state had been the second ranking officer of the Department of State. The position is currently held by Wendy Sherman. The State Department is the only federal cabinet-level agency to have two co-equal deputy secretaries.
