Stephanus I Of Antioch
Stephen I of Antioch ( la, Stephanus) was the Bishop of Antioch between 341 and 345 or 342 and 344, depending on the source. He was leader of the Arian party, called Eusebians, during the Arian controversy and an adversary of Athanasius. Arian councils Stephen was present at the Council of Sardica (343) leading the arian party alongside Acacius of Caesarea, the successor of Eusebius of Nicomedia, where he fought for the depositions of Athanasius and Marcellus of Ancyra, something the orthodox party, spearheaded by Hosius, was not prepared to do. Angry with the result, the arians left the council and reunited again at the so-called Council of Philippopolis, which condemned the two bishops and pronounced an anathema against the Fathers at Sardica. Stephanus Jacobus Du Toit
The Reverend Stephanus Jacobus du Toit (9 October 1847 – 29 May 1911) was a controversial South African nationalist, theologian, journalist and failed politician. In his younger years Du Toit did much to promote the Afrikaans language as a symbol of Afrikaner nationalism. Apart from the years 1882-8 when he was Superintendent of Education in the South African Republic, he lived in or near the town of Paarl in the Cape Colony. Disillusionment with the Kruger regime led him, in later years, to moderate his views. He was instrumental in initiating the translation of the Bible into Afrikaans and was a proponent of the Afrikaans language. He died an outcast. Stephanus Versluys
Stephanus Versluijs or Versluys (20 August 1694, in Middelburg – 27 February 1736, in Batavia, Dutch East Indies) was the 21st Governor of Dutch Ceylon. Versluijs was the son of Adriana de Muncq and Cornelis Versluijs, mayor of Middelburg and the director of the Dutch East India company's Zeeland Chamber. At the age of 19 he started to serve the company, arriving in the East Indies on the ship ''De herstelde Leeuw'' in 1713. He started as under-merchant in Paliacatte and moved in 1717 to Batavia, where by 1722 he had become upper-merchant. In June 1724 he was appointed Governor of Amboina in Ternate, in 1727 Extraordinary Council of the East Indies in Batavia, and in 1729 as Governor of Ceylon in Colombo to replace Pieter Vuyst, who had been summoned to Batavia for his tyrannical rule (Vuyst was executed in 1732 for his cruelties). Stephanus Van Cortlandt
Stephanus van Cortlandt (May 7, 1643 – November 25, 1700) was the first native-born mayor of New York City, a position which he held from 1677 to 1678 and from 1686 to 1688. He was the patroon of Van Cortlandt Manor and was on the governor's executive council from 1691 to 1700. He was the first resident of Sagtikos Manor in West Bay Shore on Long Island, which was built around 1697. A number of his descendants married English military leaders and Loyalists active in the American Revolution, and their descendants became prominent members of English society. Stephanus Schoeman (14 March 1810 – 19 June 1890) was President of the South African Republic from 6 December 1860 until 17 April 1862. His red hair, fiery temperament and vehement disputes with other Boer leaders earned him the moniker "Stormvogel den Noorden," "Storm bird of the North." Early life The first member of the Schoeman clan arrived in the Cape in 1724 from Ditmarschen in Schleswig-Holstein, Germany. Ditmarschen had been a Boer Republic (Burenrepublik) of Merchant-farmers until 1550, and the memory of this free Boer Republic must have lived on in her sons who emigrated to South Africa. Stephanus Le Roux Marais (1896 – 25 May 1979) was a South African composer. Marais was born in Bloemfontein district, Orange Free State.
