St. Lucie County Library System
The St. Lucie County Library System, based in St. Lucie County, Florida, has branches in the cities of Fort Pierce and Port St. Lucie. History The residents of Fort Pierce created and began maintaining a reading room in 1903 to loan out books donated by churches and other civic organizations. In 1913, the Women's Club residence was built and the organization volunteered to house and manage the "reading room." The St. Lucie County Library System began when the St. Lucie County Library Association was established in 1946 with a bequeath of the late P. P. Cobb, a prominent citizen of Fort Pierce. With only $1,000 from Cobb, the Library Association started working towards the building of a proper library. Under the supervision of the head of the Finance Committee, future Governor of Florida Dan McCarty, the association raised $15,000 by door-to-door petitions. Fort Pierce is a city in and the county seat of St. Lucie County, Florida, United States. The city is part of the Treasure Coast region of Atlantic Coast Florida. Dan McCarty
Daniel Thomas McCarty (January 18, 1912 – September 28, 1953) was an American politician who served in the Florida House of Representatives and served as its speaker. He briefly served as the 31st Governor of Florida from January 6, 1953 until his death of September 28, 1953. Early life Dan McCarty was born on January 18, 1912, in Fort Pierce, Florida and was the son of Daniel Thomas McCarty and Frances Lardner Moore. His grandfather, Charles "C.T." Tobin McCarty would begin an operation growing pineapples during the 1880s in St. Lucie County. C.T. would be killed during a real estate dispute when he was leaving a barber shop in Fort Pierce on January 30, 1907. Zora Neale Hurston (January 7, 1891 – January 28, 1960) was an American author, anthropologist, and filmmaker. She portrayed racial struggles in the early-1900s American South and published research on hoodoo. The most popular of her four novels is ''Their Eyes Were Watching God'', published in 1937. She also wrote more than 50 short stories, plays, and essays. Hurston was born in Notasulga, Alabama, and moved with her family to Eatonville, Florida, in 1894. She later used Eatonville as the setting for many of her stories. In her early career, Hurston conducted anthropological and ethnographic research while a student at Barnard College and Columbia University. Indian River State College
Indian River State College (IRSC) is a public college with a main campus in Fort Pierce, Florida. It is part of the Florida College System and serves the counties of Indian River, Martin, Okeechobee and St. Lucie on the Treasure Coast region of Florida. History The college was established in 1959 as Indian River Junior College and located in a former public school building in Fort Pierce. IRJC moved to its current main campus on Virginia Avenue in 1963 after the city of Fort Pierce donated the site to the institution.
