St. Louis Bombers Rugby Football Club
The St. Louis Bombers Rugby Football Club is a rugby union team based out of St. Louis, Missouri, United States. The Bombers are former members of the SuperLeague, the premier league in the United States. History 1960s–1990s The St. Louis Bombers Rugby Football Club arrived on the St. Louis rugby scene in the spring of 1962. Original founding members of the club included Frank Hauff, Gene Gladstone, Tom Jones, Cliff Schlereth, Bob Meyer, and John Himmelman, who the Black side MVP award is named after. The Bombers were a result of a merger between "The Old Blacks" and the "Sisler-Hummel" rugby clubs, two of the most powerful and successful clubs in St. Louis during the 1940s and 1950s. Coached and captained by Frank Hauff from 1962 to 1965, the Bombers immediately took control of St. Louis rugby, winning the Missouri Rugby Union Championship in their first two years and five out of their first six. University City (colloquially, U. City) is an inner-ring suburb of the city of St. Louis in St. Louis County, in the U.S. state of Missouri. The population was measured at 35,065 by the 2020 census. The city is one of the older suburbs in the St. Louis area, having been a streetcar suburb in the late 19th and early 20th centuries; much historic architecture remains in the southern, older portion of the city, particularly along Delmar Boulevard. The Missouri Rugby Union (MRFU) is the Local Area Union (LAU) for rugby union teams in Missouri and parts of Illinois. MRFU is part of the Mid-America Geographical Union (MAGU), which is of several Geographical Unions (GU's) that comprise Rugby union in the United States, USA Rugby. History Early History. Rugby Super League (US)
The USA Rugby Super League, usually known as the Super League, is a defunct national rugby union competition which ran from 1997 to 2012, contested by nine clubs in the United States by its last year. In the 2013 season, it was replaced by the USA Rugby Elite Cup. The Super League competition was sanctioned by USA Rugby, the sport's national governing body, and was the premier level of rugby union in the country until it was reformatted into the Elite Cup. Created by the management of 14 of the best rugby organizations in the United States, the league's goal was to create a high level, national rugby competition in the country. The competition was contested annually starting in 2007, with the largest number of clubs to have competed in the league being 18, in 2007 and 2008. Ron Laszewski
Ron Laszewski is an American rugby union coach. Laszewski has been the head coach of the Lindenwood men's rugby team since it was formed 2011. Under Laszewski's leadership, Lindenwood won the Division 2 national championship in 2011 in the program's first year in existence, finished runner-up in the Division 1-AA national championship in 2012, and now plays in Division 1-A in the Mid/South conference. John Alexander Tarpoff (born April 5, 1980) is an American former rugby union international. Born in St Louis, Tarpoff grew up in the metro area, attending Edwardsville High School, Illinois. Tarpoff, a prop, played for professional Welsh club Llanelli in 2002. Capped 12-times for the United States, Tarpoff was an international player from 2002 to 2006 and was a member of the national squad at the 2003 Rugby World Cup in Australia, but didn't take the field during the tournament.
