St. John's Parish (Omaha, Nebraska)
St. John's Parish is a Roman Catholic church located at 2500 California Plaza on the Creighton University campus in Omaha, Nebraska, United States. It is within the Archdiocese of Omaha and is a ministry of the Midwest Province of the Society of Jesus (Jesuits). History The cornerstone was laid on May 6, 1888, drawing 4,000 people, which was the largest crowd ever assembled in Nebraska up to that point. The building was designed by local architect P.J. Creedon in the English Gothic style. In 1897 the church was made a regular parish after the city's original bishop intended for it to only serve as a temporary church for the college-age attendees. John A. Creighton donated much of the original funding for the building. Mary Creighton, John's brother Edward's wife, donated jewelry to the parish construction fund before there was a building. The history of Omaha, Nebraska, began before the settlement of the city, with speculators from neighboring Council Bluffs, Iowa staking land across the Missouri River illegally as early as the 1840s. When it was legal to claim land in Indian Country, William D. Brown was operating the Lone Tree Ferry to bring settlers from Council Bluffs to Omaha. A treaty with the Omaha Tribe allowed the creation of the Nebraska Territory, and Omaha City was founded on July 4, 1854. With early settlement came claim jumpers and squatters, and the formation of a vigilante law group called the Omaha Claim Club, which was one of many claim clubs across the Midwest. During this period many of the city's founding fathers received lots in Scriptown, which was made possible by the actions of the Omaha Claim Club. Edward Creighton
Edward Charles Creighton (August 31, 1820 – November 5, 1874) was a prominent pioneer businessman in early Omaha, Nebraska. The elder brother of John A. Creighton, the Creightons were responsible for founding many institutions that were central to the growth and development of Omaha. Married to Mary Lucretia Creighton in their native Dayton, Ohio, Edward relied on Mary to carry out his request to create a college, which eventually became Creighton University. Biography Creighton was born on a farm in Belmont County, Ohio in 1820. He was raised in an Irish Catholic family, and was always active in Church affairs. In the 1840s, he became involved in the freight shipping/telegraph businesses. By 1856, he had become one of the largest builders of telegraph lines in the United States. Creighton University
Creighton University is a private Jesuit research university in Omaha, Nebraska. Founded by the Society of Jesus in 1878, the university is accredited by the Higher Learning Commission. In 2015 the university enrolled 8,393 graduate and undergraduate students on a campus just outside Omaha's downtown business district. Mary Creighton
Mary Lucretia Creighton (February 3, 1834 – January 23, 1876) was born Mary Lucretia Wareham in Dayton, Ohio. Creighton was a philanthropist who left a bequest of $200,000 in her will to found Creighton University in honor of her husband, Omaha, Nebraska pioneer banker Edward Creighton. Biography Edward's brother John married Sarah Emily Wareham of Dayton, Ohio; through that couple, Edward met his future wife, Sarah's sister, Mary Lucretia. They married October 7, 1856, and two years later had their only child, Charles David. He died at age five in 1863. Sir John Alexander Macdonald (January 10 or 11, 1815 – June 6, 1891) was the first prime minister of Canada, serving from 1867 to 1873 and from 1878 to 1891. The dominant figure of Canadian Confederation, he had a political career that spanned almost half a century. Macdonald was born in Scotland; when he was a boy his family immigrated to Kingston in the Province of Upper Canada (today in eastern Ontario).
