Squibs (1935 Film)
''Squibs'' is a 1935 British musical romantic comedy film directed by Henry Edwards and starring Betty Balfour, Gordon Harker and Stanley Holloway. It was produced by Twickenham Film Studios with sets designed by James A. Carter. It was a remake of the 1921 film '' Squibs'' which also starred Balfour. Synopsis In this musical comedy, a Cockney flower girl is in love with a policeman whom she wants to marry. Her father opposes the union because he is involved in a little crooked investing. The young woman wins a lottery and is able to find wealth and marital bliss. Olive Sloane
Olive Sloane (16 December 1896 – 28 June 1963) was an English actress whose film career spanned over 40 years from the silent era through to her death. Sloane's career trajectory was unusual in that for most of her professional life she was essentially an anonymous bit part actress, and her best, most substantial roles did not come until relatively late in her career when she was in her 50s. William Daunt
William Joseph O'Neil Daunt (28 April 1807 – 29 June 1894) was an Irish politician and author. Born in Tullamore, Daunt grew up on the small estate of Kilkascan, near Ballineen. There, he came to know Feargus O'Connor, who lived nearby. Although he was brought up as a Protestant, after his father's death, Daunt joined the Catholic church. He also became active in local politics as an opponent of tithes payable to the Church of Ireland, and a supporter of Daniel O'Connell. Daunt stood at the 1832 UK general election in Mallow, for the Repeal Association. His opponent was the incumbent, Denham Jephson, who owned almost every house in the town and was considered the overwhelming favourite. Ronald Alfred Shiner (8 June 1903 – 29 June 1966) was a British stand-up comedian and comedy actor whose career encompassed film, West End theatre and music hall. Career Early life and career When he was seventeen, Shiner joined the Royal North-West Mounted Police, after which he became a signalman and a wireless operator, then a farmer. He also worked as a greengrocer, milkman and book makers clerk. He served for three years in the British Army. Army concerts gave him a taste for the stage. He made his stage debut in 1928 in ''Dr Syn'' and the following year became a stage director at the Stage Society.
