Spring Racing Carnival
The Spring Racing Carnival is the name of an Australian Thoroughbred horse racing series held annually in Melbourne during October and November. The Carnival and its status in the wider community Although racing in Australia is held every day except Good Friday and Christmas Day, the Group One races in Melbourne are held almost exclusively throughout the carnival, which is traditionally placed between the football and cricket seasons. During the winter (where football is dominant), and summer (where cricket is dominant), racing takes a 'back seat' position in relation to the cricket or football in terms of media coverage and attendances. The Thoroughbred is a horse breed best known for its use in horse racing. Although the word ''thoroughbred'' is sometimes used to refer to any breed of purebred horse, it technically refers only to the Thoroughbred breed. Thoroughbreds are considered " hot-blooded" horses that are known for their agility, speed, and spirit. The Thoroughbred, as it is known today, was developed in 17th- and 18th-century England, when native mares were crossbred with imported Oriental stallions of Arabian, Barb, and Turkoman breeding. The Toorak Handicap is a Melbourne Racing Club Group 1 Thoroughbred horse race run as an open handicap race, over a distance of 1,600 metres at Caulfield Racecourse, Melbourne, Australia. Currently, the prizemoney is A$1,000,000. History The race is held annually in October on Caulfield Guineas day, the first day of the MRC Spring Carnival. During World War II the race was run at Flemington Racecourse. The G1 1400 metre Sir Rupert Clarke Stakes, held three weeks earlier under the same handicap conditions at Caulfield is considered the predominant lead up race. Thoroughbreds which perform well usually follow up by entering the G1 Cantala Stakes on Victoria Derby day. Victoria Derby
The Victoria Derby, also known as the Penfolds Victoria Derby, is a Victoria Racing Club Group 1 Thoroughbred horse race for three-year-olds held under Set Weights conditions over a distance of 2,500 metres at Flemington Racecourse, in Melbourne, Australia scheduled annually on the first day of the Melbourne Cup Carnival. Total prize money for the race is A$2,000,000. History Originally run at a distance of miles, in 1972 it was changed to 2,400 metres to conform to the metric system. It was changed again in 1973 to its present distance of 2,500 metres. First run in 1855, the first three editions were won by fillies but the last time a filly won was in 1923 when Frances Tressady claimed victory. Caulfield Stakes
The Might and Power, registered as the Caulfield Stakes is a Melbourne Racing Club Group 1 Thoroughbred horse race run under weight-for-age conditions, for three-year-olds and upwards, run over a distance of 2,000 metres at Caulfield Racecourse, Melbourne, Australia. Prizemoney is A$1,000,000. History The race is held annually in October on Caulfield Guineas day, the first day of the MRC Spring Carnival. The conditions of the race in regard to distance and WFA is similar to the W. S. Cox Plate, held a fortnight after the Caulfield Stakes, and many Cox Plate contenders will use this race as a preparatory race. During World War II the race was run at Flemington Racecourse. The 2016 edition of the race attracted only three entries, the smallest ever G1 race in Australia with champion mare Winx scaring off potential rivals. The Thousand Guineas is a Melbourne Racing Club Group 1 Thoroughbred horse race for three year old fillies at set weights run over a distance of 1600 metres at Caulfield Racecourse, Melbourne, Australia in early October. Total prize money for the race is A$1,000,000. History Between 1988 and 2013 the race was scheduled on the second day of the MRC Spring Carnival which is held on a Wednesday but it was moved to the first day in 2014. Group One, Group 1, Grade I or G1 is the term used for the highest level of Thoroughbred and Standardbred stakes races in many countries. In Europe, the level of races for Thoroughbred racing is determined using the Pattern race system introduced in 1971 and monitored by the European Pattern Committee. Melbourne Racing Club
The Melbourne Racing Club (MRC) is one of three metropolitan horse racing clubs in Melbourne, Victoria, Australia. It began life as the Victoria Amateur Turf Club, in 1875 with Mr. E.C. Moore as the club's first Secretary. The Dowling Forest Racecourse in Ballarat was the location for the first VATC race meeting on Friday, 24 March 1876. Within six months the VATC were granted use of Crown land at Caulfield as a permanent home in Melbourne.
