Spring 1977 PGA Tour Qualifying School Graduates
This is a list of Spring 1977 PGA Tour Qualifying School graduates. The event was held at the Pinehurst Resort in North Carolina. The tournament was 108 holes long. 415 players were in the field. Due to the size of the field the first three days, Tuesday through Thursday, included the addition of the No. 3 course and No. 5 course at Pinehurst. The No. 2 course would be used exclusively afterwards. After 54 holes the field was expected to be reduced to 120 players. After 72 holes it was expected to be reduced to 70 players. This was scheduled to be the last qualifying school to be held "under the present one-site format." Pinehurst Resort
Pinehurst Resort is a golf resort in Pinehurst, North Carolina in the United States. It has hosted a number of prestigious golf tournaments including three U.S. Open Championships, one U.S. Women's Open, three U.S. Amateur Championships, one PGA Championship, and the Ryder Cup. Pinehurst consists of nine 18-hole golf courses, each named simply by a number, and a 9-hole short course. Tommy Valentine
Thomas Ervin Valentine (October 21, 1949 – July 12, 2014) was an American professional golfer. College Born in Atlanta, Georgia, Valentine was a four-year letterman in golf for the University of Georgia team from 1968 to 1971, winning the Southeastern Conference (SEC) individual title in 1970, and helping Georgia win the SEC championship in 1969, 1970, and 1971. He was first team NCAA All-American in 1970. Professional career Valentine competed on the PGA Tour from 1977 until 1988, earning over $300,000 during his career, which included 14 top-10 finishes. Valentine's best finish was a second to Tom Watson in the 1981 Atlanta Classic. Valentine and Watson were tied at the end of 72 holes, and Watson won the sudden-death playoff. Alan Pate
Alan Pate (born January 19, 1953) is an American professional golfer who played on the PGA Tour and the Nationwide Tour. Early life and amateur career Pate was born in Mobile, Alabama. He played college golf at the University of Alabama, where he was an All-American in 1973. Professional career In 1976, Pate turned professional. Throughout his career, Pate played on the PGA Tour (1977–79), Nationwide Tour (1990, 1993–94, 1996–97), European Tour, Sunshine Tour and the South American Tour. Jack Renner (golfer)
Jack Renner (born July 6, 1956) is an American professional golfer who played on the PGA Tour from 1977–1988, and on the Champions Tour from 2006–2007. Renner was born in Palm Springs, California. While in high school at the age of 17, he won the U.S. Junior Amateur. He attended the College of the Desert in Palm Desert, California. He turned pro in 1976 and joined the PGA Tour in 1977. Renner had three PGA Tour event wins during that phase of his career. His first win was at the 1979 Manufacturers Hanover Westchester Classic. In 1981, he earned his second Tour victory at the Pleasant Valley Jimmy Fund Classic. His last win came at the 1984 Hawaiian Open. He had 53 top-10 finishes including over a dozen 2nd or 3rd-place finishes in his PGA Tour career. His best finish in a major was T9 at the 1985 U.S. Open. Southern Amateur
The Southern Amateur is an amateur golf tournament. It has been played since 1902 and is organized by the Southern Golf Association. From 1902 to 1963, it was played at match play. Since 1964, it has been played at stroke play. In December 2021, the Southern Amateur joined with six other tournaments to form the Elite Amateur Golf Series. Tim Simpson
} Timothy Jay Simpson (born May 6, 1956) is an American professional golfer who has played on the PGA Tour and the Nationwide Tour, and currently plays on the Champions Tour. Simpson was born and raised in Atlanta, Georgia. He attended high school at Woodward Academy where he was the Atlanta Junior Champion, Georgia Junior Champion and Westlake National Junior Champion. He attended the University of Georgia in Athens, Georgia, and was a member of the golf team. He left college early and turned professional at age 20. He earned his tour card at 21 years, 2 months. NCAA Division I Men's Golf Championships
The NCAA Division I Men's Golf Championship, played in late May or early June, is the top annual competition in U.S. men's collegiate golf. The teams that win their respective Division I conference championships are given automatic spots in the regionals. A selection committee decides which other teams play in the regionals. The top teams in each regional advance to the championship. In addition, the best player in each tournament from teams not qualified also advance to the next round as individual competitors. It is a stroke play team competition; starting in 2009, the competition changed to a stroke play/match play competition with the top eight teams after 54 holes of stroke play being seeded and concluding with an eight-team match play playoff. Wayne Levi
Wayne John Levi (born February 22, 1952) is an American professional golfer. Early life Levi was born in Little Falls, New York and attended high school in Herkimer, New York. He enrolled at Oswego State University for two years and then the University of South Florida briefly, before turning professional in 1973. Professional career Levi went on to win 12 times on the PGA Tour. His career year was 1990, when he had four wins, finished second on the final money list and was the appointed PGA Tour Player of the Year. After winning the 1990 Canadian Open, Levi advanced to a career best 19th on the Official World Golf Ranking. After the 1990 season, Levi was placed 16th on the PGA Tour All-time-money-list. This is a list of the Fall 1976 PGA Tour Qualifying School graduates. The tournament was held at Rancho Viejo Resort and Golf Course in Brownsville, Texas. It was known for its "miserable weather." Tournament summary A number of notable players did not graduate onto the PGA Tour. They included Curtis Strange, then considered by some the top amateur in the country. Strange finished with three consecutive bogeys to miss qualifying by a shot. It was considered "the most stunning development" of the event. Curtis Strange
Curtis Northrup Strange (born January 30, 1955) is an American professional golfer and TV color commentator. He is the winner of consecutive U.S. Open titles and a member of the World Golf Hall of Fame and Virginia Sports Hall of Fame. He spent over 200 weeks in the top-10 of the Official World Golf Ranking between their debut in 1986 and 1990. Amateur career Strange and his identical twin brother, Allan, were born in Norfolk, Virginia. His father, a local country club owner, started him in golf at age 7.
