The South African Railways Class 14 4-8-2 of 1913 was a steam locomotive. Between 1913 and 1915, the South African Railways placed 45 Class 14 steam locomotives with a 4-8-2 Mountain type wheel arrangement in service in Natal.Espitalier, T.J.; Day, W.A.J. (1945). They control the admission of steam into the cylinders and its subsequent exhausting, enabling a locomotive to move under its own power. Randfontein
Randfontein is a gold mining town in the West Rand, Gauteng, South Africa, west of Johannesburg. With the Witwatersrand gold rush in full swing, mining financier JB Robinson bought the farm Randfontein and, in 1889, floated the Randfontein Estates Gold Mining Company. The town was established in 1890 to serve the new mine and was administered by Krugersdorp until it became a municipality in 1929. Greenside, is a suburbs of Johannesburg, suburb of Johannesburg, South Africa. Greenside borders on the suburbs Emmarentia, Gauteng, Emmarentia, Parkview, Gauteng, Parkview, Parkhurst, Gauteng, Parkhurst and Victory Park. History Greenside lies on land that once made up the ''Braamfontein Farm'', one of many large farms that makes what is Johannesburg and its suburbs. The farm land was bought in 1886 by Lourens Geldenhuys for its mining rights as it was hoped that the Confidence Reef would extend into his farm but it did not. Land remained as a farm and by 1891 it was divided, along what is now Orange Road, between his son's Frans and Louw where the brothers had already built two farm houses. A Garratt (often referred to as a Beyer Garratt) is a type of steam locomotive invented by British engineer Herbert William Garratt that is articulated into three parts. Its boiler, firebox, and cab are mounted on a centre frame or "bridge". The two other parts, one at each end, have a pivot to support the central frame; they consist of a steam engine unit – with driving wheels, trailing wheels, valve gear, and cylinders, and above it, fuel and/or water storage. Articulation permits locomotives to negotiate curves that might restrict large rigid-framed locomotives.
