South Adelaide Basketball Club
South Adelaide Panthers is a NBL1 Central club based in Adelaide, South Australia. The club fields both a men's and women's team. The club is a division of the overarching South Adelaide Basketball Club (SABC), the major administrative basketball organisation in Adelaide's southern suburbs. The Panthers play their home games at Marion Basketball Stadium. Club history The South Adelaide Basketball Club (SABC) was formed in 1952. It was one of the foundation clubs in the sport of basketball in South Australia. 1957 saw the formation of the South Australian State League with both a men's and women's competition. South Adelaide, trading as the Panthers, entered a team into both competitions. The women were grand finalists in their first two seasons, finishing as runners-up to North Adelaide in 1957 and as champions in 1958 after defeating Eagles. In 2020, Basketball South Australia partnered with the National Basketball League (NBL) to bring NBL1 to South Australia. NBL1 replaced the former Premier League to create more professional pathways and opportunities for males and females playing basketball in South Australia. As a result, the Premier League became the central conference of NBL1. History The South Australian Metropolitan Basketball Association was founded in 1936. Marion, South Australia
Marion is a suburb in the City of Marion, around south-west of the city centre of Adelaide, the capital of South Australia. Founded as a rural village in 1838 on the banks of the Sturt River, Marion was found to have rich soil and the population expanded rapidly. Colonel William Light laid out the plan for the village, as he had done with the City of Adelaide itself. Forestville Eagles
Forestville Eagles is a NBL1 Central club based in Adelaide, South Australia. The club fields both a men's and women's team. The club is a division of the overarching Forestville Eagles Basketball Club (FEBC), the major administrative basketball organisation in the region. The Eagles play their home games at Wayville Sports Centre. Club history Early years The early remnants of the Eagles stems back to 1953, when the FEBC was established as West Torrens. 1957 saw the formation of the South Australian State League with both a men's and women's competition. West Torrens, trading as the Eagles, entered a team into both competitions. By 1958 and 1959, West Torrens were in back-to-back men's grand finals; both resulted in losses to North Adelaide. Michael Ah Matt
Michael Henry George Ah Matt (30 November 1942 – 14 February 1983) was an Indigenous Australian professional basketball player. He played for the Australian national basketball team at the 1964 Tokyo Olympics. Ah Matt was born on 30 November 1942 in Townsville, Queensland, and grew up in Darwin, Northern Territory. He represented the Northern Territory at the 1959 Australian Championships. After the Championships he moved to Adelaide, South Australia to play with the South Adelaide Panthers. He played a then record 588 games over twenty seasons with the Panthers. In 1964, he was a member of the Australian team at the 1964 Tokyo Olympics. In 1968, he was a member of the Australian team that participated in the pre-Olympic qualifying tournament in Monterrey, though that team failed to qualify for the 1968 Summer Olympics. Mark Davis (basketball, Born 1960)
Mark Davis (born December 23, 1960) is an American-Australian former professional basketball player. He most notably played in the National Basketball League for the Adelaide 36ers between 1985 and 2001, gaining the nickname of "The Chairman of the Boards" for his record-breaking rebounding achievements. Born in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, Davis became an Australian citizen in 1992. College career Davis began his college basketball career playing for the Temple Owls. He spent his final two seasons with the St. Augustine's Falcons. In his senior season in 1982–83, he averaged 20.5 points per game. Professional career Davis' first professional gig came in 1984, playing for Hamilton in the New Zealand NBL. There, he was named rebounding champion.
