Solomon D. Spady
Spady Cultural Heritage Museum is a museum of African-American history in Delray Beach, Palm Beach County, Florida. It is housed in the former home of the late Solomon David Spady, a prominent African-American educator and community leader in Delray Beach from 1922 to 1957. The museum opened in July 2001 and is funded by the Delray Beach Community Redevelopment Agency, Cultural Council of Palm Beach County, and the State of Florida. The museum is located at 170 NW Fifth Avenue in the historic West Settlers District of Delray Beach. Spady was a student of George Washington Carver, who, referred by Booker T. Washington, became a school teacher and was principal of Delray County Training School from 1922 to 1957. He inspired children and encouraged them to go to college. He is on the list of Great Floridians. Delray Beach is a city in Palm Beach County, Florida, United States. The population of Delray Beach as of April 1, 2020 was 66,846 according to the 2020 United States Census. Located 52 miles (83 kilometers) north of Miami, Delray Beach is in the Miami metropolitan area. History Early years The earliest known human inhabitants of what is now Delray Beach were the Jaega people. Tequesta Indians likely passed through or inhabited the area at various times. Few other recorded details of these local indigenous settlements have survived. An 1841 U.S. military map shows a Seminole camp located in the area now known as Lake Ida. In 1876, the United States Life Saving Service built the Orange Grove House of Refuge to rescue and shelter ship-wrecked sailors. The house derived its name from the grove of mature sour orange and other tropical fruit trees found at the site chosen for the house of refuge, but no record or evidence of who planted the trees was discovered. George Washington Carver
George Washington Carver ( 1864 – January 5, 1943) was an American agricultural scientist and inventor who promoted alternative crops to cotton and methods to prevent soil depletion. He was one of the most prominent black scientists of the early 20th century. While a professor at Tuskegee Institute, Carver developed techniques to improve types of soils depleted by repeated plantings of cotton. He wanted poor farmers to grow other crops, such as peanuts and sweet potatoes, as a source of their own food and to improve their quality of life. The most popular of his 44 practical bulletins for farmers contained 105 food recipes using peanuts. Although he spent years developing and promoting numerous products made from peanuts, none became commercially successful. Apart from his work to improve the lives of farmers, Carver was also a leader in promoting environmentalism. He received numerous honors for his work, including the Spingarn Medal of the NAACP. Delray County Training School
George Washington Carver High School was a public secondary school in Delray Beach, Florida. It served as the high school for black students in Delray Beach until the public schools were integrated in 1970. History Early history Colored School Number 4 Delray opened in 1896 and closed in 1907. In 1914, William Robinson wrote to Booker T. Washington for advice on how to get the school reopened. At Washington's request, Clarence Walker came to an abandoned schoolhouse in Delray and opened the Delray County Training School using the Smith-Hughes National Vocational Education Act of 1917, which was devised to encourage agricultural training. From 1922 to 1957, Solomon Spady served as teacher and principal. Spady, a student of George Washington Carver, was also recommended by Washington.
