Social Democratic Party (Faroe Islands)
The Social Democratic Party ( fo, Javnaðarflokkurin, lit=Equality Party, JF) is a social-democratic political party on the Faroe Islands, led by Aksel V. Johannesen. History The Social Democratic Party was founded on 25 September 1925 by members of Faroese trade unions. Its youth organization '' Sosialistiskt Ungmannafelag'' (Socialist Youth) was founded in 1965. At the 2004 general election on 20 January 2004, the party received 21.8% of the popular vote and therefore won 7 out of 33 seats in the Løgting. At the 2008 Faroese general election, 2008 general election on 19 January 2008, the party received 19.3% of the popular vote and therefore won 6 out of 33 seats. 2008 Faroese General Election
General elections were held in the Faroe Islands on 19 January 2008, the latest possible date. The Self-Government Party and the Centre Party gained a seat each while the Social Democratic Party lost a seat. It had been considered to amend the election law to hold the election two weeks later to pass a number of important bills before the election, but in the end the negotiations on this failed and the election was called on 2007-12-07. Prior to this election, the electoral system was changed in 2007 from a system with seven multi-member constituencies, which had some elements of mixed member proportional voting, to a system with a single constituency for the whole country in order to reduce disproportionality. Peter Mohr Dam
Peter Mohr Dam (11 August 1898 – 8 November 1968) was a Faroe Islands politician who was one of the founders of the Social Democratic Javnaðarflokkurin party in 1926. Born on 11 August 1898, in Skopun, Faroe Islands, Dam became a teacher in Tvøroyri. He was member of the Faroese Løgting from 1926 until his death in 1968. Chairman of the Social Democratic Javnaðarflokkurin party from 1936 until his death in 68. He was a member of the town council of Tvøroyri from 1925 until his death, mayor of Tvøroyri from 1934–1957. He was member of the Danish Folketing as one of two Faroese members from 1948–1957 and 1964–1967. From 1958 to 1963 and from 1967 to 1968 he was the Prime Minister of the Faroe Islands (Løgmaður). Atli Dam
Atli Pætursson Dam (12 September 1932 – 7 February 2005) was a Faroese politician who served as Prime Minister of the Faroe Islands on three occasions, most recently from 1991 to 1993. To this date, he is the longest-serving Prime Minister in Faroese history, having served a total of 16 years. He was born in Tvøroyri in 1932 as the son of Peter Mohr Dam and Sigrid Ragnhild, née Strøm. He was educated engineer in 1964 and worked for the Danish company '' Haldor Topsøe'' until he became prime minister in 1970. Marita Petersen
Marita Petersen () (née Johansen (); 21 October 1940 – 26 August 2001) was the first and to date only female Prime Minister of the Faroe Islands and the first female speaker of the Løgting (Parliament). She was elected to the Løgting in 1988 for Javnaðarflokkurin (The Social Democratic Party). In January 1993, she was elected to the post of Prime Minister which she held until September 1994. Later, she became chairman of the parliament from 1994 to 1995. She was Prime Minister of the Faroe Islands in a very difficult time with economic crisis. Marita Petersen died of cancer in 2001. Jóannes Dan Eidesgaard (born 19 April 1951) is a former Faroese politician. He was the Prime Minister of the Faroe Islands from 2004, starting shortly after the general election of 20 January 2004, until 26 September 2008, when a new coalition took office. He served as Finance Minister from 1996 to 1998 and again from 2008 to 2011. He was a member of the Danish Folketing representing the Faroe Islands from 11 March 1998 until 20 November 2001. 2015 Faroese General Election
General elections were held in the Faroe Islands on 1 September 2015. Elections for the Danish Folketing were held beforehand on 18 June. Background On 4 August 2015 the Løgting passed a motion that criticized Prime Minister Kaj Leo Johannesen and former Minister of the Interior Kári P. Højgaard, accusing Johannesen of lying to the Løgting in connection with a 1 million kroner break fee clause in the contract led by the Copenhagen Infrastructure Partners to build a sub-sea tunnel between Eysturoy and Streymoy. Although Kaj Leo Johannesen had previously told the Løgting that he had no part of the break fee, a judicial inquiry led by Hans Gammeltoft-Hansen (the Danish ombudsman from 1987 until 2012) confirmed in June 2015 that Kaj Leo Johannesen had knowingly misled the Løgting on several occasions, thereby breaking the law. 2011 Faroese General Election
Early general elections were held in the Faroe Islands on 29 October 2011. Faroese law states that new elections must be held at least once every four years; however, either the Prime Minister (''Løgmaður'') or a majority of the members of the Faroese Parliament (the ''Løgting'') may call an election before the end of this period. The previous elections having been held on 20 January 2008, the latest date on which the next elections could have been held was 19 January 2012. However, the Prime Minister of the Faroe Islands, Kaj Leo Johannesen, announced on 27 September 2011 that elections would be held on 29 October 2011. He gave no particular reason for his decision.
