Sloan Morpeth Trophy
The Sloan Morpeth Trophy was an amateur team golf tournament, played between Australia and New Zealand. It was contested irregularly from 1947 to 2016. The trophy was presented by Sloan Morpeth in 1956. From 1993 to 2005 the two countries played each other as part of the Four Nations Team Championship, a competition which also involved Canada and Japan, while from 2007 to 2012 it was played as part of the Trans Tasman Cup. In 2016 the trophy was contested using scores from the two qualifying rounds of the Australian Amateur. Format Except for the final event in 2016, the tournament was match-play. The size of the teams and the format varied but consisted of a combination of foursomes and singles matches. In 2016 the teams had four players with the best three scores from two stroke-play rounds counting towards the team total. Golf
Golf is a club-and-ball sport in which players use various clubs to hit balls into a series of holes on a course in as few strokes as possible. Golf, unlike most ball games, cannot and does not use a standardized playing area, and coping with the varied terrains encountered on different courses is a key part of the game. Harry Berwick
Harry Williamson Berwick (23 April 1923 – 3 April 1988) was an Australian golfer. He won the Australian Amateur twice, in 1950 and 1956, and won the 1952 New Zealand Amateur. He won two open titles in 1956, the Lakes Open and the New Zealand Open. He was part of the Australian teams that won the 1954 Commonwealth Tournament at St Andrews and the 1966 Eisenhower Trophy in Mexico City. He turned professional at the age of 52. Early life Berwick was born in Erskineville, Sydney, on 23 April 1923. He served in the Royal Australian Air Force in 1944 and 1945. He was a bricklayer. Bill Ackland-Horman
William Dinwoodie Ackland-Horman (4 January 1914 – 19 November 1979) was an Australian amateur golfer. He won the 1949 Australian Amateur, becoming the first South Australian-born player to win the title. Early life Ackland-Horman was born in Adelaide on 4 January 1914. He was the son of William Dinwoodie Ackland-Horman, who was born in Scotland and was an engineer and surveyor for Lloyd's Register of Shipping. Ackland-Horman was medical doctor. Alan Waterson
Alan Norman Waterson (18 October 1915 – 1 May 2003) was an Australian amateur golfer. In 1946 he was runner-up in the Australian Open and the winner of the Australian Amateur. He won the New South Wales Amateur Championship four times, and represented Australia in the Sloan Morpeth Trophy. Golf career In 1946 Waterson was runner-up in the Australian Open at Royal Sydney. After the first day he was tied for second place with Ossie Pickworth, two behind Kep Enderby, after rounds of 71 and 73. Enderby faded on the final day and Waterson's rounds of 73 and 74 were enough for second place, two strokes behind Pickworth, who had rounds of 69 and 76. Harry Hattersley
Harry William Hattersley (15 March 1908 – 17 February 1970) was an Australian amateur golfer. He won the Australian Amateur in 1930 and 1947, and the New South Wales Amateur Championship in 1933, 1935 and 1950. He was part of an Australian team that went to Britain in 1938 and he later represented Australia in the Sloan Morpeth Trophy. Golf career Hattersley won the Australian Amateur twice, in 1930 and 1947, and also reached the final in 1935. Robert James Brown (born 27 December 1944) is an Australian former politician, medical doctor and environmentalist. He was a senator and the parliamentary leader of the Australian Greens. Brown was elected to the Australian Senate on the Tasmanian Greens ticket, joining with sitting Greens Western Australia senator Dee Margetts to form the first group of Australian Greens senators following the 1996 federal election. The Metropolitan Golf Club is one of the renowned sandbelt courses of Melbourne and is widely recognised as one of the finest championship courses in Australia. It is located in Oakleigh South, in the city's south-eastern suburbs, approximately twenty minutes' drive from the CBD. History Metropolitan Golf Club shares its origins with Royal Melbourne Golf Club, which was founded in 1891 as Melbourne Golf Club, with the Royal title being granted in 1895. When the original course at Caulfield was turned over to housing, Royal Melbourne moved to a new course at Sandringham.
