Slemish College
Slemish College is a co-educational integrated secondary school in Ballymena, Northern Ireland. The college is named after Slemish Mountain near Ballymena in mid- Antrim, which tradition suggests was home to Saint Patrick during his youth. Context Integrated Education is a Northern Ireland phenomenon, where traditionally schools were sectarian, either run as Catholic schools ( Maintained) or Protestant schools ( Controlled). On a parental request, a school could apply to 'transition' to become Grant Maintained ( Integrated school)which would offer 30% of the school places to students from the minority community. Lagan College was the first integrated school to open in 1981. Under the delegated Northern Ireland education system, the year groups are numbered differently to their English cousins. Kenneth Wilfred Baker, Baron Baker of Dorking, (born 3 November 1934) is a British politician, a former Conservative Member of Parliament and cabinet minister, including holding the offices of Home Secretary, Education Secretary and Conservative Party Chairman. The Troubles In Ballymena
The Northern Irish Troubles resulted in 11 deaths in or near the mainly Protestant County Antrim town of Ballymena. Eight people were killed by various loyalist groups, and three by the Irish Republican Army (IRA). Two of the IRA victims were members of the Royal Ulster Constabulary; the other victim was a civilian. Of the eleven victims, six were Protestants and five were Catholics. Some of those killings are described below: 1974 Sean and Brendan Byrne, aged 54 and 45, Catholics and brothers, were shot by the Ulster Defence Association (UDA) at their pub in Tannaghmore outside Ballymena on 24 May 1974. The pub had stayed open during the Ulster Workers' Council strike. The gunmen arrived at the pub in a convoy with a busload of other loyalists. All 30 men were detained at a police road block. The Good Friday Agreement

Lagan College
Lagan College is an integrated secondary school in Belfast, Northern Ireland. It holds a total of around 1540 students. It was formed in 1981 as the first integrated school in Northern Ireland and contains students of mainly Roman Catholic and Protestant faiths, however students from other faiths also attend the school. The school is situated on National Trust land, overlooking Belfast. It is named after the River Lagan, which flows through the city. It is one of Northern Ireland's most oversubscribed secondary schools.
