Sint-Amands
Sint-Amands () is a town and a former municipality located in the Belgian province of Antwerp, Belgium. The municipality comprises the towns of Lippelo, Oppuurs and Sint-Amands proper. In 2021, Sint-Amands had a total population of 8,524. The total area is 15.58 km². Sint-Amands is located at the right bank of the Scheldt river. Effective 1 January 2019, Puurs and Sint-Amands were merged into the new municipality of Puurs-Sint-Amands. Points of interest Heritage railway The Dendermonde-Puurs Steam Railway is a heritage railroad that links up Puurs and Dendermonde. The maintenance road that runs alongside serves as a bicycle track. Bikers can leave the track in Sint-Amands and follow the scenic route up North on the banks of the river Scheldt. Puurs-Sint-Amands
Puurs-Sint-Amands () is a municipality in the Belgian province of Antwerp that arose on 1 January 2019 from the merging of the municipalities of Puurs and Sint-Amands. The merged municipality has an area of 48.99 km2 and has a population of 26,208 people as of 2021. Puurs-Sint-Amands consists of the following '' deelgemeentes'' (sub-municipalities): Breendonk, Liezele, Lippelo, Puurs, Oppuurs, Ruisbroek, Sint-Amands. Together with Bornem, the area forms a region known as Little Brabant. Creation The Flemish Government provides incentives for municipalities to voluntarily merge. Puurs () is a former municipality located in the Belgian province of Antwerp. It is located in the Flemish Region. The municipality comprised the towns of Breendonk, Liezele, , Ruisbroek (old spelling: ''Ruysbroeck'') and Puurs proper. There is also the hamlet of Kalfort. Oppuurs is a village in the Belgian province of Antwerp. It is a part of the municipality of Puurs-Sint-Amands. Oppuurs has 2,048 inhabitants as of 2021. History The first time Oppuurs was mentioned was in 1414, when it was called ''Oppuedersel''. In the 15th century, it was owned by the Van der Calsteren family. Later, Joost Snoy became the owner. In 1664, it was elevated to a barony. Later, in 1777, the properties were bought by Philippe Ghislain Snoy, who became baron. On 7 May 1818, Idisbalda-Ghislain Snoy was appointed mayor by the king. Oppuurs was part of the municipality of Puurs, and was separated from it in 1803. Émile Verhaeren
Émile Adolphe Gustave Verhaeren (; 21 May 1855 – 27 November 1916) was a Belgian poet and art critic who wrote in the French language. He was one of the founders of the school of Symbolism and was nominated for the Nobel Prize in Literature on six occasions. Early life Émile Verhaeren was born into a middle-class family in Sint-Amands, a rural commune in Belgium's Province of Antwerp. In addition to the local Dutch dialect, he adopted French as his language of culture, as was common for Belgian elites at the time. At the age of eleven, he was sent to a strict boarding school in Ghent run by Jesuits, the Jesuit College of Sainte Barbe, where he formed a friendship with Georges Rodenbach. Jan Amandus Van Droogenbroeck (Sint-Amands, 17 January 1835 - Schaerbeek, 27 May 1902), pseudonym ''Jan Ferguut'', was a Flemish poet and writer. He was a teacher and a civil servant. He was a pupil of Jan Van Beers at the ''Normaalschool'' in Lier, and a follower of Johan Michiel Dautzenberg. James Oliver Van De Velde
James Oliver Van de Velde (April 3, 1795 – November 13, 1855) was a U.S. Catholic bishop born in Belgium. He served as the second Roman Catholic Bishop of Chicago between 1849 and 1853. He traveled to Rome in 1852 and petitioned the Pope for a transfer to a warmer climate, due to his health. In 1853, the transfer was granted; Van de Velde became bishop of the Diocese of Natchez, in Mississippi, where he served until his death two years later. Dendermonde (; french: Termonde, ) is a city in the Flemish province of East Flanders in Belgium. The municipality comprises the city of Dendermonde and the towns of Appels, Baasrode, Grembergen, Mespelare, Oudegem, Schoonaarde, and Sint-Gillis-bij-Dendermonde.
