Shreveport Area Transit System
The Shreveport Area Transit System, commonly known as SporTran, is a public transportation transit bus, bus system based in Shreveport, Louisiana, United States. It runs bus routes in Shreveport and Bossier City, Louisiana. All bus routes converge at the Intermodal Facility near Downtown Shreveport. SporTran provides public transportation in the form of buses and lift vans. SporTran is one of the oldest public transportation systems in the south. SporTran has been in continual service for over 125 years with only one interruption due to the strike of 1957. SporTran operates seven days a week on 17 bus routes from 6:00 a.m. to 1:00 a.m., with shorter operations on the weekends. As of 2006, SporTran operates night service on five routes (mostly supplementing daytime service after end of service) between 8:00 p.m. and midnight Monday through Saturday with no service on Sundays. Caddo Parish (French: ''Paroisse de Caddo'') is a parish located in the northwest corner of the U.S. state of Louisiana. According to the 2020 U.S. census, the parish had a population of 237,848. The parish seat is Shreveport, which developed along the Red River. The city of Shreveport is the economic and cultural center for the tri-state region of the Ark-La-Tex containing Caddo Parish. Caddo Parish is included in the Shreveport–Bossier City metropolitan statistical area. Independence Stadium is a stadium owned by the city of Shreveport, Louisiana and is the home of the Independence Bowl. Formerly known as State Fair Stadium and Fairgrounds Stadium, it is the site of the annual Independence Bowl post-season college football game, initially ( 1976) the ''Bicentennial Bowl''. Before that, it was the home venue of the Shreveport Steamer of the short-lived World Football League (1974–75). It also served as a neutral site for the annual Arkansas–LSU football rivalry from 1924 to 1936. Southern University at Shreveport (SUSLA) is a junior college in Shreveport, Louisiana. It is part of the historically black Southern University System. SUSLA, pushed to fruition by the administration of Governor John J. McKeithen, opened for instruction on September 19, 1967. Fair Grounds Field is a baseball stadium in Shreveport, Louisiana, located next to Independence Stadium on the Louisiana State Fair Grounds just off Interstate 20. Fair Grounds Field opened in 1986 and underwent renovations in 1999, 2009, and 2011. The stadium has a seating capacity of 4,200 people. Fair Grounds Field currently does not have a primary tenant.
