The Scioto River Bridge Group was a set of historic bridges in Columbus, Ohio. The bridges were: *The Broad Street Bridge, replaced by the Discovery Bridge *The Main Street Bridge (1937-2002), replaced by the Main Street Bridge (2010-present) *The Town Street Bridge, replaced by the Rich Street Bridge The set of bridges was listed on the Columbus Register of Historic Properties in 1983. The bridges are also part of the Columbus Civic Center Historic District, deemed to be eligible for the National Register of Historic Places. The buildings were noted for their classical and Art Deco designs, and as part of the remade riverfront after the Great Flood of 1913. The Main Street Bridge in Columbus, Ohio is a , three-span, inclined tied arch bridge over the Scioto River. The bridge is the first in North America and the fifth in the world to use an inclined single-rib-tied arch superstructure. The final cost for the bridge was $60.1 million. It carries Main Street (U.S. Route 62 and Ohio State Route 3) northwest from Downtown Columbus into Franklinton, splitting into Rich and Starling Streets just west of the bridge. History The original Main Street bridge was a Whipple through truss bridge built in 1890 over the Scioto River. It was lengthened in 1917 using two spans salvaged from a railroad bridge a short distance downstream of the bridge. In the 1930s, it was replaced with a multiple-span, art-deco open-spandrel concrete deck arch bridge, built in 1937. Rich Street Bridge
The Rich Street Bridge is a bridge in Columbus, Ohio, United States, spanning the Scioto River and connecting downtown's Rich Street to Franklinton's Town Street. It carries U.S. Route 62 (US 62) and Ohio State Route 3 (SR 3). The bridge was completed in 2012. The bridge replaced the Town Street Bridge (1917-2009). The original eastern anchor remains, reutilized as the Prow, an observation platform in the Scioto Mile Promenade park. The site features stone benches, lanterns, and a grove of birch trees. The 1917 bridge was part of the Scioto River Bridge Group, listed on the Columbus Register of Historic Properties in 1983 and proposed as part of the Columbus Civic Center Historic District, nominated to the National Register of Historic Places in 1988. The Columbus Register of Historic Properties is a register for historic buildings and other sites in Columbus, Ohio, United States. The register is maintained by the City of Columbus Historic Resources Commission and Historic Preservation Office, and was established in 1980. Many of these landmarks are also listed on the National Register of Historic Places, providing federal tax support for preservation, and some are further designated National Historic Landmarks, providing additional federal oversight. The Columbus Register includes 82 entries, including 54 on the National Register. Two of the city's three National Historic Landmarks are on the register: the Ohio Statehouse and Captain Edward V. Columbus Civic Center Historic District
The Columbus Civic Center is a civic center, a collection of government buildings, museums, and open park space in Downtown Columbus, Ohio. The site is located along the Scioto Mile recreation area and historically was directly on the banks of the Scioto River. The civic center includes Columbus City Hall, the Ohio Judicial Center, Central High School (now the COSI science museum), the Joseph P. Kinneary United States Courthouse, and the former Central Police Station. It also included the Scioto River Bridge Group. The Great Flood of 1913 severely affected Columbus, Ohio. The area most affected was Franklinton (Columbus, Ohio), Franklinton, also known as the Bottoms, for its low elevation near the Scioto River. Among many infrastructure projects, a 7.2-mile floodwall was built from 1993 to 2004 to protect most of Franklinton from flooding. Columbus historian Ed Lentz described the 1913 flood as "the worst catastrophe in the history of Columbus". Background Columbus has recorded flooding events since the area was first settled by colonists around 1797, mainly on the banks of the Scioto River. Large civic buildings were planned and built: Columbus City Hall, the Ohio Judicial Center, and the Joseph P. Kinneary U.S. Courthouse. Bicentennial Park was the first added on the riverfront, in 1976; and in 1983, Battelle Riverfront Park opened. The parks were separated, and Civic Center Drive, then a five-lane street, cut the parks off from downtown Columbus.
