School District 61 Greater Victoria is a school district in the Canadian province of British Columbia. This includes Victoria, the municipalities of Esquimalt, Oak Bay, View Royal, and parts of Saanich. History The earliest history of schools in Western Canada is within the boundary of the current Greater Victoria School district. The first school in the area that is present day British Columbia was established at Fort Victoria in the 1840s. A plaque to commemorate this can be found on the side of the Christmas Store on Government and Fort Street in downtown Victoria. The first public school was opened in 1853 near what is now Central Middle School. This building later became Victoria High School. When the area became part of the province of British Columbia there were already three school districts in the area: the Victoria City School District (established on June 25, 1869), the Esquimalt School District (October 22, 1870) and Craigflower School District (July 23, 1870). ... Craigflower Elementary School is a public elementary school located in Victoria, British Columbia, Canada. It is the current version of the oldest schoolhouse in Western Canada, and National Historic Site, Craigflower Schoolhouse, and the third school to be called "Craigflower". The third, and current Craigflower School was constructed in the same location in 1963, and has been in constant use for more than half a century. History Originally constructed as Maple Point School in 1854, on the order of Alexander MacKenzie, it was founded as part of Craigflower Farm, one of Western Canada's first farming communities. Spectrum Community School is a high school in the Greater Victoria suburb of Saanich, British Columbia, Canada. It is part of the Greater Victoria School District and serves the western portion of the district. Spectrum was established in 1974 as a replacement for Mount View High School and the school moved into the new facility in 1976. In 2005 a $5.5 million addition and renovation was completed. École Secondaire Oak Bay High School is a high school in the Greater Victoria School District and is located in Oak Bay, British Columbia, Canada. The enrollment is approximately 1,400 students attending in grades 9 to 12 in both regular and French immersion programs. The school moved into new facilities on the same site in 2015. Mount Douglas Secondary School is a four-year public secondary school located in Saanich, British Columbia, Canada, with around 850 students on roll. The school is part of the Greater Victoria School District (SD61), and is known locally as "Mount Doug". In 2003, the school changed from a Senior Secondary model, teaching grades 11 and 12, back to the current and original grades 9 to 12 structure. It is the oldest high school in the province, and is often cited as "the oldest public high school in Western Canada." History The high school opened on August 7, 1876, in a log cabin with two classrooms on the school reserve between Yates Street and Fort Street bounded by Fernwood Road, the grounds of the current Central Middle School building.
