''Scaredy Squirrel'' is a children's book series written and illustrated by Canadian author Mélanie Watt. The first book of the ''Scaredy Squirrel'' series was published in March 2006 by Kids Can Press. A television series based on the books began in 2011. Premise The stories are told using large pictures with simple descriptive text. The books follow the same format, the titular protagonist Scaredy Squirrel identifies his fears, shows how he avoids them at all costs, and develops contingency plans, which usually involve an emergency kit and playing dead till the threat has passed. Scaredy is faced with the fears he tries so hard to avoid, learning that it is not as bad as he initially imagined. However, he only slightly alters his strict daily routines after these experiences. Mélanie Watt
Mélanie Watt (born August 20, 1975 in Montreal, Quebec) is a Canadian children's author and illustrator. She is best known for ''Scaredy Squirrel'', which won the Ruth & Sylvia Schwartz Children's Book Award and was published in French as ''Frisson l'écureuil.'' Melanie Watt's other major picture book series is ''Chester'', which is about a cat named Chester who competes with Watt for the chance to write and illustrate his books. The ''Chester'' book received a starred review from ''Publishers Weekly''. As of 2012, she has sold over two million books that have been translated into 23 languages. Biography As a child, Mélanie Watt enjoyed drawing the comic strip character Garfield. The ''Scaredy Squirrel'' series is influenced by Watt's childhood experiences, including her childhood fear of sharks. She received a BA in graphic design from the Université du Québec à Montréal. ''Scaredy Squirrel'' is a Canadian animated television series based very loosely on the ''Scaredy Squirrel'' book series by Mélanie Watt. The series premiered on April 1, 2011 on YTV in Canada and August 9, 2011 on Cartoon Network in the U.S. The final episode aired on August 17, 2013. The series also aired on Qubo from 2017 to 2020. YTV is a Canadian English language specialty channel owned by YTV Canada, Inc., a subsidiary of Corus Entertainment. Terry McGurrin
Terry McGurrin (born November 5, 1968) is a Canadian voice actor, comedian, and writer from Ottawa, Ontario. He was the story editor for the 2011 YTV show ''Scaredy Squirrel''. He has most recently been story editing and executive producer for the reboot of Total Drama Island, Total DramaRama, '' Total Drama: All-Stars'', '' Total Drama: Pahkitew Island'' and '' The Ridonculous Race'' (in which he also voices the role of the host, Don).
