Sarntal Alps
Sarntal (; it, Sarentino ) is a valley and a ''comune'' (municipality) in South Tyrol in northern Italy, located about north of the city of Bolzano. The municipality comprises several towns and villages. The largest one, seat of the mayor and council, is ''Sarnthein''. Geography Sarntal borders the following municipalities: Hafling, Freienfeld, Klausen, Franzensfeste, Mölten, Ratschings, Ritten, Jenesien, St. Leonhard in Passeier, Schenna, Vahrn, Vöran and Villanders. The Durnholzer See is located in the municipal territory. The main river is the Talfer, which has its source at the ''Weißhorn'' mountain in the ''Pensertal''. History The village of Sarnthein was first mentioned in 1211. Coat of arms The emblem represents an or deer’s head on azure. Schenna
Schenna (; it, Scena ) is a ''comune'' (municipality) in South Tyrol in northern Italy, located in the Passeier Valley, about northwest of the city of Bolzano. Geography As of 30 November 2010, it had a population of 2,841 and an area of .All demographics and other statistics: Italian statistical institute Istat. Gustav Hofer
Gustav Hofer (Sarntal, 9 May 1976) is an Italian film director, screenwriter, journalist and TV host. Biography Gustav Hofer graduated in "Communication sciences" in Vienna and then in "Cinema" in London. Later he moved to Rome where in 1999, he built a relationship with Luca Ragazzi. In 2001, Gustav started working for the TV channel Arte where in 2005 he started to host the show "Journal de la Culture - Arte Kultur". He started his work as film director in 2004, directing the TV documentary "Il Sangue dell'Impero" (Blood of the Empire) together with Pietro Suber. Four years later, in 2008, Gustav Hofer and Luca Ragazzi directed the autobiographical documentary " Improvvisamente L'Inverno Scorso" (Suddenly, Last Winter), dealing with the difficulties of being a gay couple in Italy. Franz Thaler
Franz Thaler (6 March 1925 in Sarntal – 29 October 2015) was an author from South Tyrol, a peacock quill embroiderer and a survivor of the concentration camp in Dachau concentration camp, Dachau and satellite camp in :de:KZ-Außenlager Hersbruck, Hersbruck. In 1939 his father decided in the South Tyrol Option Agreement that his family should remain Italian citizens and should not adopt German nationality. As a consequence his family was harassed and isolated: Thaler was no longer allowed to attend school. In 1944, at the age of 19, he was called up to do military service in the German Wehrmacht, despite his Italian nationality. At first he went into hiding for several months, but finally gave himself up when his family was threatened with reprisals. Thaler received a sentence of 10 years’ imprisonment in Dachau concentration camp from a military court. Ladin Language
Ladin (, also ; autonym: , it, ladino; german: Ladinisch) is a Romance language of the Rhaeto-Romance subgroup, mainly spoken in the Dolomite Mountains in Northern Italy in the provinces of South Tyrol, Trentino, and Belluno, by the Ladin people. It exhibits similarities to Swiss Romansh and Friulian. The precise extension of the Ladin language area is a subject of scholarly debate. A more narrow perspective includes only the dialects of the valleys around the Sella group, while wider definitions comprise the dialects of adjacent valleys in the Province of Belluno and even dialects spoken in the northwestern Trentino. Deer
Deer or true deer are hoofed ruminant mammals forming the family Cervidae. Or (heraldry)
In heraldry, or (/ɔːʁ/; French for "gold") is the tincture of gold and, together with argent (silver), belongs to the class of light tinctures called "metals", or light colours. In engravings and line drawings, it is hatched using a field of evenly spaced dots. It is very frequently depicted as yellow, though gold leaf was used in many illuminated manuscripts and more extravagant rolls of arms. Villanders
Villanders (; it, Villandro ) is a village and ''comune'' in South Tyrol in northern Italy with 1,875 inhabitants (as of December 31, 2013). It is located in the Eisack Valley above Klausen. Geography Villanders lies on the ''Villanderer Berg'' (Mountain of Villanders), at the top of which lies the ''Totensee'' (Lake of death).
